Stop The Cigarette-Smoker Hatin'

Posted 09-07-2007 at 02:30 PM by MsJacquiiC
So anyway - I've been a smoker for years now - Legally --- So you can imagine my fury at knowing Tennessee was raising taxes on cigarettes AGAIN!

It seems to me that there's a campaign to cut down on the amount of smokers - But I think by raising taxes is an underhanded and sneeky way to go about it! What is going on seems to be like an "underground" type of PROHIBITION campaign - Except it's not alcohol being banned - It's cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products...

IMHO - It SUX!

So I had just received an interesting circular via regular mail about signing an internet petition to stop the cigarette-smoker hatin' --- I posted it just a moment ago in the General Chat area: http://jpicforum.info/general-chat/a...html#post25978 --- So any smokers out there - PLEASE check out the post - It allows you to send letters of "protest" to your State & Federal Senators and members of Congress!

That's my little bit of internet activism for the moment!

Smoking is becoming more and more socially unacceptable and the people want to see less of it, perfect examples are raises in tax and the introduction of legislation to ban smoking.

Although I do agree that smokers have gotten the short end of the stick and I don't like the idea of a nanny state.

The funny this is that you constantly see all this outcry for smoking being bad for your health but what about obesity, the biggest health problem facing America. What's next... taxing big macs and french fries? :P

In the end it's allllllllll about the money. ;)

Well hell Anthony why not ?? they already tax toilet paper.

And Jacquii... I agree with your right to choose for yourself... I used to be a smoker. I quit by personal choice about 7 or 8 years ago now. I do not force my choices on others. I just discovered why I was smoking. It was because I was tired of being dominated and told what to do. Your reason is your own person demon hon. And only you can make choices how to deal with it. I Think the governments of the world should tax .. war for petes sake. tax the countries that start the wars. Like Iraq and Iran and so on. Why can't folks live and let live?
Anyways that was my rant.... enjoy your smoke Precious. *hugs*

Just actually got an email from my State Senator Bob Corker...

Quote:
Dear Ms. Cooke,

Thank you for taking the time to contact my office about the use of a cigarette excise tax to fund the State Children's Health Program (SCHIP). Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts.

On August 2, I voted to reauthorize and fund SCHIP because I believe it has been an important and successful program and because I made a commitment to Tennesseans to do all that I can to expand access to affordable health insurance. While this reauthorization bill is far from perfect, it does ensure that more low-income children in Tennessee and across America will have health insurance. I believe this is our moral obligation.

As you know, the Senate SCHIP reauthorization bill is funded by an increase in the federal excise tax on tobacco. I agree with you that this is an imperfect way to expand SCHIP. During the debate on this issue, I supported an amendment that would sunset this funding source after 5 years. Unfortunately, this amendment was voted down.

The SCHIP reauthorization is only a short-term and partial solution to a much larger crisis facing our country: the 45 million Americans, including 800,000 Tennesseans, who lack adequate health insurance. Beyond the chaos for our healthcare system and the economy, the health and emotional toll is enormous.

As a first step towards comprehensively addressing this crisis, I, along with Senator Burr (R-NC) and others introduced the Every American Insured Health Act, S.1886, a proposal that ensures all Americans have access to affordable healthcare coverage without contributing to our ballooning national debt. This proposal is meant to be a starting point of a larger debate aimed at addressing a healthcare crisis facing Americans across our country and I look forward to pursuing this important issue.

Thank you again for your letter. I hope you will continue to share your thoughts with me over the next six years.

Sincerely,

Bob Corker
United States Senator
Anyway - seems like a bad excuse if you ask me... Tennessee FINALLY after years of debate - approved the TN State Lottery.... Supposedly a lot of the Lottery money goes towards funding education scholarships... The other day there was a lotto winner of some 300,000,000 DOLLARS ---- That's a lot of zeros people!

Perhaps some of that money can go towards the "SCHIP" --- Thing is.... Lots of people want to get rid of cigarette smoking all together - A lot of those people happen to be big-money Washington D.C. lobbyists...

Bottom line - The cigarette/tobacco products tax is unfairly aimed at Smokers... I think at least the "government" could be honest about the fact and say "Hey - we think smoking is bad for you and we want to have a State where there is no smoking allowed!"

Don't hold your breath people LOL
