It Could Be Me, It Could Be You!

When I broke the husk apart
There he was standing alone,
In rags that were not his
With a bottle I didn’t know,
Was plain old simple water
But I thought alcohol,
What a bum, not worth a glance
How the hell could I have known?

“Can you spare a cig, buddy?”
“I only want a fag”
Shunning him, I walked away
Scoffing his tattered rags,
Salvaged from a life-line bin
Torn from a garbage bag,
That’s the reason that I shun
And sometimes even gag...

When they get, way too close
Begging for what-ever,
Just a feed, sometimes is all
Nothing ever better,
Just the basic needs of life
The edge of man-kind’s tether
The reduction of a man
Into a street lined beggar.

Opulence, I enjoyed
A car worth twenty grand,
A wife and kids, oblivious
Of where we all could stand,
The CEO of all I own
Panics and demands,
Out-sources all production
Into a foreign land.

A job of twenty years
A whisper in the wind,
Long-service, benefits
The man above rescinds,
Nothing left, all is gone
She left and took my kin
My hope and adulation
Increasingly grows dim.

Curled inside a husk
One day, maybe I’ll eat,
Those better off
With tarnished teeth I greet,
Can you spare a dollar?
Hope still on its feet
Bleary eyed and determined
That life will not defeat.

Some good plain homespun truth in that one. There but for the grace of God, go I.

Very nicely written, Lycan!
I love how you've shown both sides of the same coin!
