Cowboy Dream
For years I’ve had this wondrous dream,
That I’ve kept to myself,
A dream that I cannot fulfill,
Still I keep it on the shelf,
Since I have been a little boy,
And spent each Saturday,
In a movie theatre front row seat,
Taking in the matinee.
My dream was to be a cowboy,
With black, stitched leather boots,
A fancy shirt and tight blue jeans,
A silver gun that shoots,
One with an ivory handle and,
Six bullets I could spin,
A leather holster with my name,
That I could put it in.
A belt with lots more bullets,
My horses name is Sam,
I like to swagger when I walk,
I nod, say, “Howdy Ma’m,”
I’ve got a lasso I can use,
With skills that you’ve not seen,
Though I am tough, I might seem gruff,
But never am I mean,
I cook my grub on open flame,
I ride the open range,
I’m pretty good at fixin’ fence,
And if you think that’s strange,
I sleep out under open sky,
I watch the stars at night,
I never cuss, smoke or spit,
And never, ever fight.
I go to town each Saturday night,
Sarsaparilla’s all I touch,
If I would try the stronger stuff,
I wouldn’t amount to much,
When I’m out on the range alone,
I play a cowboy song,
On my old, flat top guitar,
And I will sing along.
I yodel a bit, and I’m quite good,
There’s no one around to hear,
Just me and Sam; my dog-named Shep,
They’re all that I hold dear.
This dream, sometimes I lose myself,
I’m living it today,
This cowboy dream, I’ve always had,
Just will not go away,
For years, I’ve had this wondrous dream,
That I’ve kept it to myself,
At times then, when I feel so, moved,
I take it off the shelf,
I put it on; it comes alive,
Though I am now a man,
I’m there; that’s me; my horse and dog,
My pistol in my hand.
My time is up; I’m home again,
And I am just myself,
My dream has lasted long enough,
It’s now back on the shelf.

Sally,
Thank you very much. It is great to hear from a lady on this one. It lets me know that the cowboy dream does not just belong to the masculine gender. I think there is something about the romance of the west and the wide open spaces that appeals to all of us. Again, thanks.
Ron
Ron Bliss, I absolutely loved your poem about your dream to become a Cowboy. It seemed to be so true, that I actually believe that is your dream. I write Cowboy poetry too and it seems to set me free for a brief time from all of our cares in this life time. You wrote a very touching and interesting poem that I hated to see end. Thank you very much. I would like to welcome you to my site at: www.spiritual--harmony.com to see the pictures of our horses on the Web Directory, just click on 'Our Animals.' You will see us riding together and rounding up the horses along with our children and grandchildren riding our gentle horses. I hope to read more from you. Thank you, tamm0449 Spiritual Harmony
