Dogs

This poem was written by request for an animal cruelty webpage. It is a sad commentary on the disgraceful way some humans treat the so-called lesser creatures of God.

My amazement never ceases,
When I think of how they care,
So innocent and trusting,
Always wanting to be there,

Beside us when we eat or sleep,
Or simply sit and read,
They’re faithful to their masters,
And will follow every lead.

Companions without question,
We have not a closer friend,
With loyalty unwavering,
They’re with us to the end.

What really does amaze me,
Is in spite of all they do,
We humans are so callus,
In the things we put them through.

I’ve seen them kicked and beaten,
With a chain, a stick and such,
Or starved with bones protruding,
When they do not ask for much,

Neglected with their open sores,
Chased with rocks and stones,
Forced to fight another dog,
They limp with broken bones.

Dropped off in the country,
Chased away with heavy scorn,
And yet it is the fault of us,
That they were even born.

They’re beaten, shot and tortured,
And mistreated without end,
While all they ever wanted was,
To be a human’s friend.

Someday I know, that I will stand,
Before my Maker’s face,
He will hold me accountable,
For all done in this place,

When that day comes, and I am there
This phase of life has ended,
He’ll know if I did right by all,
His creatures I befriended.

I love my little friends! It is a shame to cause pain to a being that simply loves without strings. Good work here.

Stardust,
I really do appreciate your comment on "Dogs". If you haven't already, I invite you to read "My Little Dog", I believe it is listed in the same category. Your comments and the fact that you took the time to respond are genuinely appreciated. Ron

Dear Ron: Thank you so much to reply to my reply!! I certainly appreciate your kindness. Your Poetry: I find it not only beautiful, but also full of compassion. You see, I joined the Animals´Advocate Brigade for the ASPCA. (American Society for Prevention to Cruelty to Animals). I receive Newsletters from them, although I live (Abroad) in the foot of South America at the present time. They tell me that, the ASPCA Mission Orange is now officially underway. It is focused, in measurable efforts to create a Country of Humane Communities, where Animals receive the compassion and respect due to them as sentient beings. They are also working on Petitions to let Governments of the World know that, they are indeed, serious about achieving a "UNIVERSAL DECLARATION ON ANIMAL WELFARE AT THE UNITED NATIONS." I feel at ease, receiving this good news and a sense of achievement. I am an American Woman, and an ANIMAL LOVER. I love dogs, cats, horses, birds, and all kind of Animals. I also love Our Natural Environment, since the Planet Earth is our common home. If all humans do not Protect it, we will all be doomed in the future. Thank you, dear Ron, for bringing this Subject-Matter into this lovely and friendly Forum for Writers. We speak our minds and souls. God bless you, Ron!! Hugs. Sincerely, Stardust.
