Light in the Darkness

You've brought tears to the eyes of this poet! I don't think I've had such praise for anything that I've written.
You saw where it came from and where it ended. Yes, it came from a very deep abyss within my soul. So deep, I lost the very voice which helped me vocalize the pain within. Voices within tortured me for a few years, yet, when they silenced the voices, they also silenced the one I depended on the most.
It was when I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, everything held within came flooding out with my voice floating on top, lol. I have a poem about it, but haven't put it anywhere in a long time because of the pain it could cause others (and because it could really use some editing, lol). It was the first poem I'd written in over 30 years and the first thing I'd written in almost 10 years.
Someone who's never been through it, doesn't understand how deep depression can take you. It took a long time for me to climb to the top.
Oops, I get a bit long-winded at times, lol.
What I meant to say was "Thank you for the moving review of the poem I most identify with."
hugs,
Gail

Hello Gail!
Wow, I got a flashback when reading this because lots of times with my own writing I like to incorperate black/dark skies or darkness and light shining through. I think is a powerful and strong image to start with and definitely has some very symbolic imagery to it. I love the imagery that you have going on here too, you being stuck at the bottom, reaching for this light, yet unable to reach it. Hearing the echoes within the bottom that you're stuck in. I could definitely relate to this as well through my own experience of going through depression and this rings true to what one experiences with it.
I really do love your ending, that is definitely my favorite and so true:
Cries in the darkness heeded,
friends waited with understanding. To make my way out of darkness,
I had to climb out myself.
The last two lines I highlighted because this is so true that you have to be the one to climb out of the darkness, to find your way out, no one else can do this but yourself. Friends can stand by and offer their support, so can family, but the person in this has to figure out their way out of it and they need to find the way out. This is one of my favorites of yours, Gail, I thought this was a wonderfully done poem that I enjoyed relating to and especially the last two lines just really rang true to me. Overall, I'm glad I came across this poem of yours and thanks for sharing it!
I'm glad you could see the images and symbolism in here. Quite a few people just didn't get it and thought the repetition of the darkness was bad.
It's difficult to climb out of the depression darkness. What's even more difficult is understanding only you can help yourself out of it. Friends are there when you reach the top.
