Proud Warriors

Three days from
the meeting place
where bull elk
bugles woman's
arrival.
On the 12th day
of their trek, two
women arrive,
thirsty, their goatskin
botas emptied of
wine, skylighted before
they drop into the
valley to join what is
clearly the main
migration to the elk rut.
For us, the mystery
of female migration
makes it more
compelling,
crossing borders,
finding an alternative
route, sexing each other
at the base of a basalt
ridge.
Built-in curiosity
and acute sense
of smell, intuition
walking in deep
grooves of an
age-old migration
track, leading the
way for other women
to encounter.
Leather-skinned
nomads, wolves
coming in close
range of fifty feet
of the proud
warriors.
Bull elk bugles,
finding solace in
knowledge that
woman has arrived,
unnamed peaks,
mounds of beautiful
female flesh heaved
up.
On this journey to
face the challenge
of the nature of
woman and to save
a piece of it, to
witness the birth of
woman in her natural
habitat.

Hey SAGE - interesting story you tell... I like the ending of your piece, as it insinuates such mystery. Yeah - such is the "name" of woman. Eternal woman always evokes such mystery...
Nice piece - Thanx for sharing it.
BTW - beautiful beautiful picture to accompany the piece!

Thanks for stoppping by and reading Proud Warriors, MsJacquii. I'm lucky. I live in the Colorado mountains and get to witness the deer and elk rut. Gives me ideas for my own heat! This poem is broadcast out to those women who are feeling the season, so Sage is blowing the clarion, bugling the mating tune...

Hi Tree,
Thanks for dropping in...I can sense you are in tune with the cycles of nature up in your area. I could learn alot from you from not only your wisdom, but from your geographical location. As nature-loving women, we recognize the seasons in time of fruition when all is abloom and dormant when the season slows, giving us a time to reflect on the new growth which lies ahead. It is a good way to live, don't you think? It's good to know you, Tree...
