silence

silence.

it's deafening.
not even the thoughts in your mind
can drown out its omniscient throbbing.

so stale.
painfully stubborn.

you pray for a pindrop to take away its power,
its vicegrip on the world around you.

alas.
a savior.
a hero.
a rustling tree.

Hello seajay!

I really enjoy this poem... it's great with your observations but then it's also quite funny as well... well, I broke into a smile with your last stanza of your poem and how you say:

alas.
a savior.
a hero.
a rustling tree.
-

Wow, I can relate so much to this stanza too... I am a person who just can't stand silence and it can feel that way when the silence just gets too much and I can't stand it anymore... and I think that it's clever how you broke your lines as well, giving your reader time to take a pause with each line and then the last line is just great.

I must say that I really enjoyed this poem. You start it out very nicely too, with the beginning line to describing silence with that first line and saying how its deafening which it definitely is... I actually have a poem that I created which tackles silence as the subject for it and I think that this added to my enjoyment of reading this... because your poem did a different play of what silence is and how you formatted your poem too. I also liked how you described it with each line as well. And another favorite of mine was:

so stale.
painfully stubborn.

Because it does seem to me that silence is just so painfully stubborn and it was an interesting thought of it being stale. Though, I definitely enjoyed your poem as a whole overall. Anywho, I must say that I am glad that I came across this! Thank you for sharing and keep on writing away!

Biography: I graduated from California Polytechnic College in Pomona, California in my past life. My first job was at a newspaper in the Display Advertising Department. Well, this is an interesting little thing. For those who have no interest in silence, it's a mantra, I am quite sure. On the other hand, for those of us who spend their entire lives seeking silence, it's the antithesis.
Nicely done, and appreciated.

I, also, wrote a poem titled Silence. Since it was written during a period of quiet and loneliness, I can understand the grip it can make on you. How you can hear the blood rushing past your eardrums, the tiniest sound explodes, the loneliness expands to immense portions and you wonder how you didn't hear those sounds before.

Since I also have tinnitus (ringing in the ears), silence is harder to endure. The constant buzzing, sometimes a muted tone, sometimes loud enough to be heard over the tv, is something I've learned to ignore until the silence hits.

I grew up in a family of nine so silence was always welcome but as an adult I've learned what silence can do.

Thanks for posting this.
Gail
