Wake of the Jetties
In the wake of Jetties she’s said to be found
safe from the pirates that stole her at birth.
She made a life upon the rocks,
her voice the music of a lonely tide.
One clear day, he caught her eye
as he ran from the shore,
and dove head first into the sea.
He swam.
He swam hard;
his muscles swelled, rolled
with each stroke, gliding,
swift as a blue marlin.
Disguised as a dolphin
she swam closer, making circles around him.
His brown eyes were venerable
as dauntless mountains.
Each day he returned, until one day
a rampant tide pulled him into the jetties,
beat him against the rocks.
He floated face down in blood clouded water.
He awoke on the shore in a pouring rain;
his hand clenched a gold clam shell.
The wind of the storming surf sang out his name,
and forever he wondered.
