Icon14 Spark Your Creativity Challenge # 16 (This is Me Poem)

Spark Your Creativity #16 (Exercise: Write a “ This is Me” poem).

This challenge created by me was inspired by one of Ms Jacquii’s Favorite Songs,
(Here’s Where I Stand…by Tiffany Taylor in the movie CAMP)…Ms Jacquii often refers to this song as her anthem. I love love love this as well and viewed it once again yesterday, and thought of this challenge. Please view the video and lyrics to the song if you like.

LYRICS

[Tiffany Taylor] (Cast)

Here in the Dark
I stand before you
This is my chance to show you my heart
This is the start, this is the start.

I have so much to say and I'm hoping
That your Arms are open
Don't turn away, don't you need me?
But you have to hear me.

Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
Love me, but don't tell me who I have to be
Here's who I am,
I'm what you see.

You said I had to change and I was trying
But my heart was lying
I'm not a child any longer
I am stroooongerrrr

Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
Help me, to move on but please don't tell me how
I'm on my way, I'm moving out

In this life we've come so far
but we're only who we are (who we are)
Courage of love (Courage of Love)
will show us the way (Show us the way)
Unlock the power
To stand up and saaaaa--aaaaayyy (Stand upppp)

(Up and say!)
Herreeeee's where I stand
Here's who I am
(Stand Up) I'll be counting, counting on you
If you're with me, we'll make it through

Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
Love me, Love me, Love me, and we'll make it through

Here's where I stand,
Baby, Baby, Baby, I'm counting on you

Here's where I stand
Love me, Love me, Love me, and we'll make it through

I'm counting, Oooh,
I'm counting,
I'm counting, I'm counting onn....
Yooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

[Tiffany adlibs throughout this part]

(Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
I'm counting on you)

(Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
We'll make it through)

(Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
I'm counting on you)

(Here's where I stand,
Here's who I am
We'll make it through)

(Repeat till fade)

About writing a “ This is Me” poem:

This exercise will give you a chance to be inspired to write about yourself! One of the hardest writes for some poets and authors is to write about themselves. The song speaks of acceptance, acceptance of one’s self, acceptance by others for who you are and where you stand. Not something else that other’s may want you to be or to become.

Having said that, please write a poem (rhyme or free verse of 20 lines) expressing “ who you are,”
where you stand,” and “what you want your audience to be able to “ feel” and “ visualize” about the
" real you” after reading your poem.

Exercise:

· Write a 20-line poem. Any format. Any rhyme scheme.
· The title of your poem must be strong and really describe “ YOU”. Strong in the sense that we may even figure out who wrote the poem before reading it.
· The inspiration and content for your poem must be in sync with the theme of the song provided.
· The purpose of this exercise is that you may be inspired by writing about your strengths, weaknesses, your quirks, your heart, your humor, the love inside you, your ways, the depth of your poetic soul, how you value things & people, how you direct us to recognize something wonderful & beautiful about you, and etc.
· Make your poem memorable and linger in our minds! Leave us shaking our heads saying, "Yup, that certainly is ________!".

You will most likely be surprised what you come up with when writing about “ yourself” and may even discover something “ new” about yourself.

The benefit of this exercise will allow you to see that even though Writers Block may creep up on us, that these exercises may help us to overcome that nasty critter!

Enjoy AND Happy posting! SMOOCHES

“Reflections Of My Soul”

I see evil, evil in your eyes
There have been many days of my life
Silence has surrounded me
Unforgiving wanting to fight
Fight the evil rising in me
~
My heart shines
Shines on me
With the reflection
Of love
Evading solitude within my heart
~
The beast lies dormant
Covered with true love
True love that comes from deep down
Deep down in the pit of my soul
Waking up
Showing emotions of
Who I really am
~
This is who I am
Showing you
Reflections of my soul

This is Me

I’m not how you see me, inside I am new,
first woman in my family to earn a degree.
Don’t try to hold me back, don’t put down my dreams
because you don’t understand me anymore.
Don’t think I am crazy for climbing the ladder later than most.
I’ve made a choice to be what I once thought impossible.
Don’t try to convince me that my dreams aren’t real
that the years I spent in college were wasted time.
I love this new person I discovered within myself.
I cannot live inside of the shell you pasted around me.
I’ve chisel in hand. I’m on my way out. The shell is thin and cracking.
I love all of those above who showed me what to believe,
the ghosts on the ladder, the spirit of knowledge rising.
My greatest desire is to share only a speck of their courage
to feel a miniscule of pride for my effort to lead
my future generation to that great sea of respect,
to give them courage to climb what once seemed impossible.
I’m not trying to prove myself better. I know more than ever that I am not.
So please don’t step on me, don’t try to hold me down.
My struggle is hard enough without the weight of your disapproval.

It’s Easy To Hide Inside A Dream

There is no hiding place for the poet
I dodged the issue for thirty long years
Running from that stage fright, don’t you know it
Forever putting excuses to my fears
~
I dodged the issue for thirty long years
While living a life so worth the living
Forever putting excuses to my fears
My own soul to keep, that now I’m giving
~
While living a life so worth the living
When I’m holding the treasure in my hands
My own soul to keep, that now I’m giving
Well worn particles of time’s golden sands
~
When I’m holding the treasure in my hands
I can see the world with eyes wide open
Well worn particles of time’s golden sands
Bound for that which I was always hoping
~
I can see the world with eyes wide open
Running from that stage fright, don’t you know it
Bound for that which I was always hoping
There is no hiding place for the poet

Way to go Art, keep reflecting that poetic soul my friend. Jolie, great words...I am proud to be one of those ghosts...and one who knows how hard it is to keep hold of those dreams.

Shhh. No one knows

Shhhh. No one knows!

Laughter is my soul food
My faith is my subsistence
My daughter is the air I breathe
My skin defines my existence
My pain is my drive
Forgiveness is my brake
Men are my weakness
The person most people know, she’s fake
My mistakes haunts my soul and
Bad decisions torment my spirit
Being a mother, mistakes are eternally unforgiven
Heartache and pain, Love and war, more money more problems
The essence of lessons learned
I’m hurting inside, the fire continues to burn
I am not always happy, and my life isn’t great
My voicemail is lying, this agony I can’t shake
Without god, my life would have no meaning
Thank goodness for his grace
Understanding of his world, my life is leaning
Shhhhhh, No one knows!
