All Work And No Play
"Daddy oh daddy please play with me."
A little boy with shining eyes
his little face aglow,
"Daddy you promised that today
you'd take me to the show."
"Oh no," said daddy "not this time"
"I've worked so hard all day,"
"I need some rest a quiet place"
"I don't have time to play."
"So run along don't bother me
"And maybe some time next week,"
"I'll take you then if I'm not tired
Down to the Willow Creek."
But next week comes and the little boy
Is crying on his bed,
Because his daddy broke again
The promise he had said.
I have no time, I'm busy now
And tomorrow, is all he hears,
But even though he's sad and hurt
He dries his little tears.
He doesn't understand it when
His daddy tells him no,
But he says he's sorry anyway
For bothering his daddy so.
Months and years have passed away
The days were slipping by,
His wife had died his son was grown
And he heaved a heavy sigh.
His thoughts race backward to the times
When his son had begged to play,
But he didn't pay no mind to him
He just made him go away.
Now he sits there thinking sad at heart
That if he could start anew,
He'd play the games and do those things
His son had asked him to.
