Small flies dance round expectantly
on parched young lips ‘cross broken teeth.
But there is nothing to be had;
no crumbs for this child to bequeath.

He sits alone on burning soil
as naked as nine years ago,
extended belly full of air -
no one to heed that small child’s woe.

Imploring eyes unanswered still,
he crawls along on abscessed legs
to where the dogs have left their scraps,
and sips upon rainwater dregs.

Until a stranger passes by
and clasps that waif unto His breast.
From that day on the child grows strong -
no worries now, for he’s been blessed.

I’m thankful for a place called home,
good food to eat, a flyswatter,
my new extended family.
I’m thankful I’m that child no more.

This one really moved me. So much pain, and in the end so much to be thankful for... Brought tears to my eyes....

Beautiful message in this.
We should never take things for granted.
Well written Terence. A moving, good poem!

Thank you both very much. It took a while for this poem to be noticed, I just hope the same cannot be said for their plight.

The effect of this poem is overwhelming, written so deep that if one is paying attention to the words then the pictures will come into ones mind with it. The plight of these people should be brought to the surface just as you have done here.

Dear Terence,

I do apologize for responding late to this jewel. It all has been said, however, the impact is no less great. What you have done here is wonderful...and yes...quite moving. Brings tears to my eyes and I do hope as Ms Lindamay has said that we hope the plight be brought much sooner than later. This piece cannot be read just once and reads as an anthem of sorts. Exquisite in execution and the way my heart feels right now. Excellent rating Terence. Blessings...

No apologies necessary, Kimberly, not on my account. Thank you for your kind words and I hope a bright day greets you this morning.

Terence
