Hi BEKI - what a very lovely collection of haiku - I see you've written some very traditional ones, especially the piece in memoriam - That's one of my favorites of the collection! Very somber tone - holds a bit of irony within - A nice piece of writing, I tend to wonder if the "one hatless mourner" is in fact HiroHito himself watching as a spirit?

At anyrate - nice of your to share your writings with us - I'm looking forward to more of your writings.

thanks for your comments - I rarely write traditional 5-7-5 haiku anymore, these are some of my earliest published ones. The one for Hirohito actually was inspired by a newspaper photo the day he died - it showed a crowd of mourners outside the palace in the pouring rain and there in the middle of the crowd was one bareheaded man...I saw it and thought immediately "now THAT is a haiku moment!" and wrote the poem. It has been published in a few small press literary magazines tho it was years ago.

These are so beautiful...as haikus have that special quality...

I love the "hush moment" that this one induces at the reading of the end...it sort of stops you and forces you to reflect....

The think is that the haiku (5-7-5) is more of an "English" traditional, whereas the Japanese haiku is based more on the sound of the words rather than the syllable count. I actually wrote an essay about the distinct differences - somewhere in the annals of JPiC LOL - I posted a similar "definitive" on JPiC Affiliate Poetry-Defined - Haiku - Forms ---- I actually hope more people will recognize that the haiku is more than 5-7-5 syllable count and dwelve deeper in to the "meaning" and knowledge espoused within...
