N.J. Dog Crowned World's Ugliest

Jun 23, 11:44 AM (ET)
PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) - Elwood, a 2-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix, was crowned the world's ugliest dog Friday, a distinction that delighted the New Jersey mutt's owners.

Elwood, dark colored and hairless - save for a mohawk-like puff of white fur on his head - is often referred to as "Yoda," or "ET," for his resemblance to those famous science fiction characters.

"I think he's the cutest thing that ever lived," said Elwood's owner, Karen Quigley, a resident of Sewell, New Jersey.

Quigley brought Elwood out to compete for the second year at the annual ugly dog contest at the Marin-Sonoma County Fair. Elwood placed second last year.

Most of the competing canines were also Chinese Crested, a breed that features a mohawk, bug eyes and a long, wagging tongue.

Quigley said she rescued Elwood two years ago. "The breeder was going to euthanize him because she thought he was too ugly to sell," said Quigley.

"So ha ha, now Elwood's all over the Internet and people love him and adore him."

Beyond the regal title of ugliest dog, Elwood also earned a $1,000 reward for his owner.

The Winner: World's Ugliest Dog 2007
ELWOOD

Elwood, who weighs in at just 6 lbs and was rescued as the result of a New Jersey
SPCA investigation, has won the title of World's ugliest dog of 2007.

Other Contestants: World's Ugliest Dog 2007
Pee Wee Martini Pure bred Chinese Crested.

Pee Wee Martini is a 2 year old Chinese Crested/Japanese Chin mix. He has an au natural mohawk, a bald body, a crooked face, a tongue that NEVER goes inside his mouth, and eyes that are way too far apart and he's just fine with that. He's a happy guy and would love to have your vote.

Rascal Pure bred Chinese Crested.

Rascal is Ugly Dog Royalty being from a dynasty of ugly with his Mom, Grandmother, and Grandfather all who have held the title of "The World's Ugliest Dog" each 1-8 times. Rascals Grandfather "Chi Chi" is in the Guinness Book of World Records for winning the most ugly dog contests and is still undefeated with 8 ugly dog wins not to be beaten anytime soon.

Squiggy Chinese Crested and Japanese Chin.

We adopted Squiggy almost a year ago at sixweeks of age. He's a rather odd mix of (hairless) Chinese Crested and Japanese Chin--of royal lineage, no doubt. He resembles a comical Dr. Seuss character, with his long neck, bug eyes and huge ears. The underbite and spikey mohawk add to his "bad boy" image, not to mention the polka dot outfit.

Ellie Details not given.

Her favorite thing to do is sleep!! She spends her days lounging around the house, usually finding the sunniest spot. This of course means we need to move the bed as the sun moves. She is spoiled rotten. She also takes time to visit the local senior center, where she is passed from lap to lap. We are not allowed to leave until everyone has had a turn.

Well,
I think he's kind of cute, if it weren't for the oversized tongue. He looks healthy, some of these dogs look like they have birth defects.

Chinese crested are wonderful dogs, but with inbreeding and lack of oral care they end up like the poor babies above. Thank goodness there are wise people who can see the beauty under the ugliness ... God bless them all.
