If you can't go to sleep - A poem by Rumi

If You Can't Go To Sleep by Rumi
if you can't go to sleep
my dear soul
for tonight
what do you think will happen

if you pass your night
and merge it with dawn
for the sake of heart
what do you think will happen

if the entire world
is covered with the blossoms
you have labored to plant
what do you think will happen

if the elixir of life
that has been hidden in the dark
fills the desert and towns
what do you think will happen

if because of
your generosity and love
a few humans find their lives
what do you think will happen

if you pour an entire jar
filled with joyous wine
on the head of those already drunk
what do you think will happen

go my friend
bestow your love
even on your enemies
if you touch their hearts
what do you think will happen

Ms Jacquii...thank you for posting this. Rumi was a mystic poet and I love love love his work. I think perhaps he was multi-dimensional living on the Earth plane as well as Heaven's plane. Just wow....often times I read his work and am simply out of words, or maybe there are just NO words to describe me, the poem, and my emotions after reading a Rumi.

You are so right! But wasn't he brilliant!! I love Rumi's works and absolutely adore the vid recital - The readers voice is so soothing. But even more than simply a mystic poet he was a wonderful philosopher and even theosophist. Multi-dimensional living indeed.

I've just read some background info about him on

The general theme of Rumi's thought, like that of other mystic and Sufi poets of Persian literature, is essentially that of the concept of tawhīd – union with his beloved (the primal root) from which/whom he has been cut off and become aloof – and his longing and desire to restore it.
I can certainly dig it! Sounds like the story of my life and what drives my own poetry....

Thanks for commenting Ms. Kim!

BEAUTIFUL!

After reading, viewing and hearing this video, I have renewed hope to make a difference in some small way before I leave this Earth. It's so easy to get caught up in the details of your life and forget that you actually have this choice.

I second this motion SuzyQ...I also believe we make a difference in miniscule ways that are not as noted, perhaps we don't even know that with say, just a smile, we made someone's day. We can indeed get caught up. I love his work, and I am always literally "moved" by his beautiful poetry or prose.

I third the motion! Both of you ladies have posted on the concept of poetry-as-therapeutic-cure for whatever's ailing humanity. Imagine so many (after hearing, reading, being immersed in Rumi's works) being inspired to make a positive contribution to society through whatever means available, even if simply a true smile lauded upon a stranger...

No need to get caught up in our own shyt when we are sharing in smiles and laughter and kindness towards fellow man.

Ha - I'm thinking of the butterfly effect ==> I smiled, therefore there is no new California forest fire destroying acres and acres and acres... hmmmm - Interesting stuff this poetry LOL

Great posts ladies!
