Hello all!
Hi guys, I'm Kyla. This seems like a pretty cool place. I was told that I need to start getting my poetry published so I can have more credentials when I venture off into the big, bad world. I'm currently a student, and I will be for some time longer. I'm 23 now (almost 24), and I've written poetry since I was 16.
I will wholeheartedly welcome all critiques however harsh (though not hateful) on my poetry, as I want to get it up to par for publication. I've never been good at knowing what to revise on my own. I doubt I'll do much critiquing until it's been a while... I would love to return the favor, but I'm not much of a critic. If something really moves me, I will offer advice. Also, if you love my poetry, great! But I prefer constructive criticism to praise, because I need to prepare for rejection. I can tell you some things I don't like to see in writing are crazy long descriptions of things (no doubt Harry Potter is good, but those descriptions are so long-winded), adverb-itis (this is the reason I could never enjoy Twilight, behold : He gazed unseeingly ... wtf?!) and metaphors, unless you can write them like Tom Robbins can.
I LOVE the style of Janet Fitch, but poor girl only has two books in print. I want more! (White Oleander and Paint it Black). My favorite authors are Milan Kundera and David Levithan. If you know them than you know that these writers are many things all at one time, as all good writers should be. As for poetry, I can't get enough of Dorothy Parker. She is the only person I've ever seen who, because of her tremendous wit, can rhyme extremely well. I wrote a poem last night in her vein, but I doubt it's half as good. I recently finished the Dorothy Parker Anthology, which I recommend to absolutely everyone. I'm also in love with Poe, Plath and Sexton. My poems similarly tend to be dark, depressing and often vague. I also have collected works of Dylan Thomas and Emily Dickinson, though I haven't read them yet.
I've been in a rhyming rut lately, which I hope you all will help me edit out of, because most places I want to submit don't like rhyming poems. I look forward to interacting with everyone!
