Daughters of the Wind
DAUGHTERS OF THE WIND
(an explanation)
Each of the daughters can be playful whiffs of gentle puffs of air
or be a zephyr which in turn becomes a breeze.
Each can fade away into hushed stillness or instantly gust into a raging squall, suddenly shifting to change into irregular forces of strengths and weaknesses, ripping ancient oaks out by the roots, transforming into such weakness she can barely ruffle the wing of butterfly, then build to an overwhelming force demolishing homes and buildings.
Whether shrieking and howling, sighing in a soft whiff, or even when not felt nor heard, they are with me always, singing in my heart or swirling my blood into a whirlwind of exaltation.
Nine named daughters, each with her own identity, that taunt me night and day, week in, week out. Often, one will control my mind,
demanding to carry me in her rise and fall, her rhythm and meter,
her ebb and flow until her fury is spent and she vanishes into nowhere.
The strongest, by far, are Calliope, Erato and Melpomene.
Yes, they all are named Goddesses and well known to Poets. They are the Muses, daughters of Zeus, king of the gods and Mnemosyme, goddess of memory. Metaphorical, they are my daughters of the wind.
Calliope: Muse of eloquence and heroic poetry
Clio: Muse of history
Erato: Muse of love poetry
Euterpe: Muse of lyric poetry and music
Melpomene: Muse of tragedy
Polyhyymnia: Muse of sacred song
Tepsichore: Muse of dancing and choral song
Thalia: Muse of comedy and bucolic poetry
Urania: Muse of astronomy

Re: Daughters of the Wind
O Muse
.
O Muse, that lurks, alas, beyond the veil.
A shadowed form drifting in clouded mist.
Far easier to find the Holy Grail,
than finding you, should you choose to resist.
.
O Muse, walk through the verses I have penned
and wander through the caverns of my mind.
Give me the greatness only you can lend.
Without you I am deaf and mute and blind.
.
O Muse, together you and I can fly
beyond the walls of dull, unthinking wit.
We can replace the tear in Beauty’s eye,
and drive the Devil back into his pit.
.
O Muse, you are a free and untamed soul,
that flashes through the canyons of my mind,
and when the drums of inspiration roll,
I seek you and you’re always there to find.
.

Re: Daughters of the Wind
Kim..........It appears you are the only one to take up the challenge. I shall whisper in Urania's ear to visit the swirling mists of your thoughts. I shall wait for your poem here.

Re: Daughters of the Wind
Sartor, I always enjoy your work tremendously....this one is so beautiful...gives me a wonderful feeling! I love Caliope, so I shall try my hand at that one, maybe mixing in another...will see. Thanks for finding them all...I had no idea that there were so many!

Re: Daughters of the Wind
these daughters in your mind kind of sound like alternate personalities. lolol but i like it. i might try this when my head and life slow down some. i'm sure i will put some twist on it as i usually do with 4 different meanings for ten different people and not nearly as straight and classically poetic as yours, but hey we all got our view of the universe. thanks for this sartor. twill be fun

Re: Daughters of the Wind
Nomad...........the poem can be anything that references your muse as the main subject. Perhaps your muse is a male.......even though in mythology the muses are the nine daughters of Zuse.....your muse can be anything you wish to make it be. I look forward to your post.
Zaac.........Thanks for being interested. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. As I told Nomad........the muse can be anything you want it to be. A dream visitor, an errant thought that comes and goes.....whatever you make it, just make sure the reader of the poem knows it is your muse you are writing about.

--------------------------
Here is another one of mine.........about my muse.
ILLUSION
Within my mind a looking glass,
where everything’s reversed.
Into it sometimes I may pass,
‘tis there we have conversed.
At times confusion reigns supreme,
but sometimes order rules.
She may speak soft or she may scream.
At times she ridicules.
It’s difficult I must confess,
she has no form you see.
Just an illusion more or less,
but still she talks to me.
She speaks at times in clarity
with words that I may use
to write the lines of poetry
from my illusive Muse.

Re: Daughters of the Wind
Caliope came a calling
in dreams of long ago
but upon awakening
I had nothing real to show!
She flits in and out like a firefly
quick glimpses of her intact
and just for a second there
I’d think I got the brat!
Full of dares and dreamscapes
siphoning eloquent brew
she deals in mists and minstrels
never clear on what to do!
The games she plays frustrate me
I’d like to tie her down!
since I really prefer not to
awaken with such a frown.
In lands of dragons and damsels
I always save the day
the hero in me’s anointed
by Caliope’s own special ray.
