His Office,
a case study in the fine art of minimalism.
Sparsely furnished in antique Victorian furniture,
gleaming, polished to a blinding shine,
yet as cold as the late Queen in her ornate tomb.

His Patient,
Sniveling, whining, adding to the aura of misery
like howling dogs on dark cold night .
His mind inattentive , his thoughts distant
revisiting a cheating wife .

Interrupted, caught in the throes of passion.
On his bed, in his apartment with his best friend .
Enough, he must let go of his professional facade
so he hastily scribbles a prescription for Prozac
and sets another appointment date .

Once alone,
he finds himself drowning
submerged in hot tears of scalding rage
disillusioned, he finds himself wondering
didn't he study long and hard
wasn't he by merit qualified, certified

To be somehow immune to pain .

I remember this piece. You first posted it on Facebook right?

I think this is really some of your best writing Jon - It's deep. Makes me think of the proverb, "Physician, heal thyself!" --- Perhaps that's easier said than done.

But I love how you set the stage for this write. It reads wonderfully. And intensely, as I imagine being part of the medical profession; doctor by trade, psychiatrist by choice. Having to sit and hear everybody else bitch and moan. Yet having your own "I need to bitch too" moment and there's noone to take the load away from your heavy heart.

Puts me in mind of the Catholic Father taking everyone's confession, but who will hear his own?

I'm rambling. Anyway - I truly enjoyed this poem Jon. I enjoyed it the first time I read it and now re-reading it, I know it's something special.

Jacquii.

“I do use powerful words to evoke emotion, but also to stimulate imagination. If one can 'see' the words dance before
his eyes - then he can likely feel, smell and even taste them as well. And I do thoroughly enjoy really tasty poems.
My poetry is an emotions-fest sprinkled with a little garlic salt, Mrs. Dash, fresh ginger and Tabasco sauce...
My poetry is like a piece of General Tso's chicken tossed in ghetto soul.” ---

I always wonder what's going on with you. Hadn't seen you on Facebook in a minute now that I think about it. So what's up - what's "unwell"? But whatever the case may be - I hope you start feeling better immediately!
