Default Time Remembered Sartor Started This Thread
TIME REMEMBERED
.
Long ago when time was cheap
And friendship ran both wide and deep
We sought our second youth.....
Mid cans of beer and bottled wine
At midnight suppers we would dine
And we ignored the truth
.
We played silly little games
And gave each other foolish names
And laughed at Father Time.....
In a smoky cabaret
Or on the beaches we would play
And life was so sublime
.
Taking trips across the land
While through life’s hourglass the sand
Of time did slowly run.....
Suddenly it came to me
No longer could I plainly see
The reason for the fun
.
Father Time walked at my side
I slowed my pace to match his stride
The truth had come at last.....
Clearly now I saw the sign
The grape had withered on the vine
My second youth had past
.
Now I delve in ancient tomes
And read my many books of poems
And seldom go to bars.....
And recall when time was cheap
When friendship ran both wide and deep
And watch the desert
stars
.

I've gotten to an age now where Father time has had to slow HIS pace to match mine! LOL! Thank-you for posting this - it has brought back some wonderful memories and the rhyme and rhythm made it a most enjoyable read!

ChrisA......Youth always laughs at Father Time until the wisdom of years eventually brings sober truth to the forefront. I am glad you enjoyed the poem.

Altree94.......Memories of happy and loving times past are always with us. Thank you for commenting. Skonnakowa friend, skonnakowa.

This is both heartwarming and a warning I think...to take youthful life in huge gulps and enjoy everything, for quickly comes the time when your perspective changes and although life is still enjoyed, that "first love" has matured and the excitement has faded. Wonderfully written!

Nomadic.......the poem speaks of growing old, which we all must do as time passes. It speaks of the end of middle age and still trying to hold on to the parties, the night life, the fun and the essence of youth, until at last the realization arrives that you are no longer interested in that way of living and it is OK to slow down and simply enjoy the September of your life.

I also like your personal quote Sartor. It reminds me of another quote:

For it was not only a man like
himself who saw what was true,
the thing we are all in need of;
innumerable other people also
think themselves in possession
of it.

ChrisA......Thank you for the note. I have always enjoyed proverbs and have many favorites. Here is one that, to me, speaks the truth:

All Gods and Devils that have ever existed, are within us.
