I believe there were seven,

Possibly eight…it is fairly hazy

Through the looking glass

Pearl City, Hawaii...circa 1978

Saturday night at Little Orphan Annie’s

“The Three Dollar High Open Bar”…I know,

It’s too late to change it now,

Told you it was hazy

If you were there that night

Raise your hands…I see,

Well I know who was there

We were there to see the band

A Black Sabbath cover band

How cool is that?

Waiting in line outside

“Let’s smoke a couple of joints” said Mr. Dye

We still didn’t know

We could do that inside

Three dollar cover buys admittance

Watered down well drinks

As fast as you could

For two hours

And then you wait for the band…

Hey, you smell that?

Look over there…and there…wow, really?

Cool!

“Hey guys, I just met a dude” says one of

The seven or eight, wait…one of them is me

Could have been me

“He’s selling microdot…wanna try it?”

Well, we were thinking, good place to get ripped off

But wouldn’t it be cool if it was real!

“Hell yeah!” I might have said

~

Where’s the band?

Damn, ripped again, oh well

Where’s the band?

Damn, two joints passing at once?

How much do we have left?

Seven or eight…okay

Where’s the band?

Where’s the bar?

Smokey in here isn’t it,

Trippy too

Where’s the band?

Damn...ripped again

“I’m with the band.”

“Hell, I’m with the band too.”

“We are the band.”

“Where’s the band?”

“You know the band. I’m with the band.”

Hey, go over to the bar and find out what’s up with the band

“Uh, sure…where’s the bar?”

Damn...tripped again

“They cancelled. There’s another band coming. Don’t worry, there will be a band.”

“Damn…look at that, she’s three people wide!”

“That’s too much, we’re too stoned and she’s too wide and that ain’t right…WE’RE WITH THE BAND!”

Damn...rippling again

And here they come…

A Rocking Rod cover band?!?!

We can sing better than them…

And so we did

“The Ballad of Little Orphan Annie’s”

Some people got no humor…

What? Told you it was hazy

There were seven…maybe eight

Of the finest radar operators you will ever find

Gathered in a bar way across the ocean

Waiting for the band to arrive

Living for the moment

It will never

Be the same

My friends

Cheers

~

Mike,
This is the kind of free verse that requires the reader to "have been there" as much of your jargon surrounds the era it was written...I doubt if there are many places someone can "light up" inside these days. And I don't anymore, myself. But because I "have been there" I understood the crazy haziness of your writing. So, you have captured this experience. But I must say I've seen you write much better work....

Well, at least your writing, that's something. As Shakespeare in, "Shakespeare in Love," said. "The oregan of my imagination has dried up." I havn't been able to come up with anything lately.

I had days like these when I was young, I've grow'd up too. California Jam II, was a huge event like Woodstock. Crazy, and then there were a few concerts and parties, but I wasn't as bad as a lot of the kids. I wasn't a big stoner or acid freak, but I didn't want to look a nerd either. At the same time, I was a little afraid of anything to trippy. LOL, I don't regret any of my youth. Heck, it was a part of the culture of my generation. At least we see both side of the story.

Are you familiar with the Beat Poets? If you're bored, here's a link to some info...

I think this poem works well as a sort of poetic memoir.
