Southern Hum Press
2007 Women of Words Award and Poetry Chapbook Contest
- Contests

Southern Hum Press is seeking to publish the award-winning poetry chapbook that exemplifies the very best writing by a woman writer. We are seeking strong voices and expressions of today’s women writers who approach writing with vision, passion, fresh language and a meticulous attention to craft. Entries can be representative of all types of writing styles whether traditional or experimental. Entries for this contest need not be Southern-themed.

  • Entries should be no longer than 26 pages in length.
  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed as long as we are notified immediately if manuscript is accepted elsewhere.
  • The award winner will receive a prize of $250 and 25 copies of the chapbook.

(Additional copies can be purchased by the author for a 50% discount.) The chapbook will also be available for purchase on the Southern Hum Press website.

We prefer emailed submissions. Send the manuscript as a Microsoft Word document attachment in an email which includes a brief cover letter containing contact information in the body of the email. Please put “2007 Women of Words” in the subject line. All electronic entries for this contest should be sent to: southernhum@gmail.com

Entries must be received by July 15. However, the sooner we receive your manuscript, the better. That means we have more time to spend with it and will not feel rushed when making our decision

If a manuscript must be sent by postal mail it can be mailed to:
Southern Hum Press
210 S. Demanade Blvd.
Lafayette, LA 70503

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a $10.00 entry fee payable on the site through PayPal. If the manuscript is sent through postal mail, send a check or money order for $10.00 payable to Southern Hum Press.

“I do use powerful words to evoke emotion, but also to stimulate imagination. If one can 'see' the words dance before
his eyes - then he can likely feel, smell and even taste them as well. And I do thoroughly enjoy really tasty poems.
My poetry is an emotions-fest sprinkled with a little garlic salt, Mrs. Dash, fresh ginger and Tabasco sauce...
My poetry is like a piece of General Tso's chicken tossed in ghetto soul.” ---

Ms Jacquii, this looks rather interesting, am going to analyze further, and may submit.
