Storyglossia Fiction Prize 2007 Guidelines

Contest Guidelines

The Storyglossia Fiction Prize 2007 Contest offers $1000 and publication in Issue 23, October 2007 of Storyglossia to the winning story. All styles, subject matter, and forms of short stories in the literary fiction genre are welcome. Please submit only original and previously unpublished fiction up to 7500 words. Simultaneous submissions are accepted provided immediate notice is given if work is accepted elsewhere, which will disqualify the story from the contest without refund. Multiple submissions are accepted, but entry fee applies to each submission. Only submissions for which an entry fee has been received prior to the deadline will be entered in the contest; otherwise the submission will be considered as part of Storyglossia's regular submission process. All contest entries will be considered for publication.

Entry Fee: $10 per story

Submission Period: Submissions only accepted between May 15, 2007 and July 15, 2007

Entry Deadline: July 15, 2007

Prize: $1000 and publication in Issue 23, October 2007 (Publication date October 15, 2007)

Judge: Storyglossia editor Steven J. McDermott

Notification: Finalists (only) will be notified via email on September 15th. All submissions, however, will be considered for publication and non-finalists being considered for a future issue will be notified by September 30, 2007.

How to Submit

Step 1 - submit via email:

Submit via email only. Paste the text of your submission into the body of the message as plain-text. Do not send an attachment. If special formatting is required a file may be requested after the piece has been accepted.

Use Fiction Prize - Your Name - Story Title as the message subject and send your submission to: fictionprize AT storyglossia DOT com

Indicate in your email submission whether you are paying your entry fee via PayPal or by check.

Formatting Notes: Upon publication, paragraphs will be indicated, as they are in print media, by having their first line indented (unless the paragraph begins a section), so if you want space inserted to indicate a section break, put *section break* between the two paragraphs where the section break is to occur. If you want a particular special character to be inserted in the section break, you can indicate it like this: *section break, use ~~~*

Indicate italics by inserting an * before and after the italicized words—*like so*.

Step 2 - pay entry fee via PayPal or check:

To pay entry fee online (preferred): use the PayPal button at Storyglossia Fiction Prize 2007 Guidelines. You do not need to have a Paypal account to use this method.

In the "Payment for" field, please enter your name, title of the work submitted, and date submitted. (Example: Author B. Goode, "Mighty Fine Story," May 25.)

(International Contributors: PayPal will convert currency automatically.)

To pay entry fee via check: Send a check for $10.00 per submission made out to Steven McDermott to:
Steven McDermott
Storyglossia Fiction Contest
1004 Commercial Ave. #1110
Anacortes WA 98221

With your entry fee include a cover sheet indicating the title of your story(s), the date submitted via email, and your email address for notification.

Note: Submissions are only accepted via email. Do not send your submission with the entry fee.

“I do use powerful words to evoke emotion, but also to stimulate imagination. If one can 'see' the words dance before
his eyes - then he can likely feel, smell and even taste them as well. And I do thoroughly enjoy really tasty poems.
My poetry is an emotions-fest sprinkled with a little garlic salt, Mrs. Dash, fresh ginger and Tabasco sauce...
My poetry is like a piece of General Tso's chicken tossed in ghetto soul.” ---

This is another good one and I am learning quickly that there is a big difference between the literary fiction genre (what is acceptable and not actually), and the mainstream genre (mystery, romance, horror, etc.) as far as contests are concerned. Thanks for this one as well Ms Jacquii!
