So... It's 2008 - It's an election year - A Presidential election year - The primaries for both the Republican and Democratic parties are now officially over. John McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee, while Barack Obama has apparently clinched the Democratic spot, winning out over Hillary Clinton's groundbreakingly historical campaign. I do suppose Obama's campaign is groudbreaking as well, considering he's the first Black American to garner a major political party's nomination for President of the United States.

So - I make this thread and post this poll... What are your feelings about the race thus far? Who are you planning to vote for (if anyone)? Where do your feelings lie with the two major Dem and Repub parties? Why do you think your candidate of choice should succeed President Bush and become the new President of the United States?

Let's talk about it!

Clinton suspends campaign, endorses Obama

By BETH FOUHY
Associated Press Writer
Jun 7, 8:15 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton suspended her pioneering campaign for the presidency on Saturday and summoned supporters to use "our energy, our passion, our strength" to put Barack Obama in the White House.

"I endorse him and throw my full support behind him," said the former first lady, delivering the strong affirmation that her one-time rival and other Democratic leaders hoped to hear after a bruising campaign.

Amid tears from her supporters, Clinton issued a call for unity that emphasized the cultural and political milestones that she and Obama, the first black to secure a presidential nomination, represent....

John McCain 2008 Launches New TV Ad: "Safe"

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released its newest television ad entitled "Safe." The ad highlights John McCain talking about his service to the country and his dedication to keeping this nation safe. This is the first ad in a major new ad campaign targeting battleground states.

Republican National Convention Statement - June 7, 2008
RNC Statement on Democrat Party Disunity

WASHINGTON – RNC Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan released the following statement today:
Saturday, June 07, 2008

“Even as Senator Clinton concedes her candidacy and endorses Barack Obama today, it’s clear the Democrat Party is struggling desperately to unify. Senator Clinton was correct to question Obama’s naïveté and inexperience, and those concerns remain for all voters nationwide. As Senator Clinton and other Democrats have clearly stated, their Party will struggle to coalesce behind Barack Obama.

“I am confident voters across America will reject Barack Obama on Election Day, just as half of his Party already has – and with good reason. Barack Obama’s inexperience, poor judgment, and fundamental lack of understanding of issues that matter most to Americans are becoming more visible every day. As voters become more familiar with Barack Obama’s record in the coming months, they too will see why he is not qualified to be Commander in Chief.

Personally - I like McCain and I hope Mrs. Clinton is not counted out of the running just yet - It seems that she apparently has gotten more votes than Obama in the Democratic Primary... So I've heard a time or two...

At anyrate - we shall see - I think it will be a most interesting campaign from here on out...

I'm not sure how I feel about this election year. There has been so much trouble with it all I'm not sure how I'll vote. Barak seems like an ok guy and so does McCain. I was excited about Hillary running and even considered voting for her and hoped she would be the candidate for her party but alas...sigh!

Anyway, the thing my husband and I keep hearing about is the 'experience' each candidate has which qualifies this person for the office of president. Ken pointed out, unless you are an incumbent running for a second term, you don't have the experience as a sitting president. Each of them, though they've been in government, House of Rep, Senate, etc, have NO experience being the president. All they can do is imagine what the burden of running an entire government, at the top position, is like.

Otherwise (now that my ranting is over, lol) I don't know. I'm a Democrat, would I vote for Obama simply because he's black and it would make history for him to make the office? probably not. Would I vote for McCain, simply because he's white and a good ole boy? probably not.

I was impressed by Obama during the last election and how he spoke out about the nastiness which accompanies most elections. My impression...I want Hillary!!!! lol Oh well, push come to shove right now, I'd probably vote for Obama simply because he wants to get rid of the nastiness and the good ole boy clique which seems to be what our government has become.

It's too early, still, to say right now. I want a clearer picture of both candidates before I make a definite choice and that will take time. I'll probably be indecisive right up to the point of actually making my vote.

hugs,
Gail

I was actually hoping Hillary would get the nom... The boys have done it for so long - The voice of change would be that of a woman, not some lanky jaundice-monster LOL --- Obama seems a hypocrit to me - I don't like him... I read the other day that he quit his church because of the "drama" about some comments his Reverend made. Said something about "after a lot of thought blablablablabla and bla I quit the church blablabla...." I hate to be calling people cowards (no I don't actually ) but that just didn't sit with me quite right. Is that the type of President we need during this most interesting time in history? One who will quit, cut out and run at the 1st opportunity... Nope! Not IMO - John McCain has been around for a while though - He has a flawless list of credential in my humble opinion. He's a veteran who knows the call to arms theme quite well, having been a POW for some time and having survived the ordeal. He definitely has the most experience in top-level politics. He's many friends on both sides of the political aisle. I think for the most part - My mind is made up - But we shall see

Jacquii.
