"Traffic on the boulevard is light this morning. Interstate traffic varies from moderate to heavy with steady progress going into the city. John Terrance didn't get any this morning, but his wife is doing fine right now with light traffic of her own."

John Terrance jerked his eyes down to glare at the radio momentarily before he returned to watching the road. When he resumed watching the roadway in preparation for finding an exit so he could turn around, things seemed different. Everything was shades of blue. Nearly everything, that is.

He reached for his flasher switch and slowed his vehicle to merge right and off the road. John knew something was wrong, but he wasn't certain just what. Moments later, he left the traffic and slowed to a stop on the roadside. For a few moments, he just sat and stared around at the scenery. He didn't notice the vehicle pull to a halt behind him. Not until he heard the rapping on his window did he even realize that he wasn't alone.

"Yes, Officer?" John asked as he blinked a few times at the silvery-uniformed elf.

"I'm going to have to write you a ticket for being John Terrance."

"It's illegal to be me?"

"It is until you're not. Of course, you're welcome to step out of the car and become a unicorn. If you do that, then I won't have to ticket you."

John rubbed his forehead for a moment instinctively. "A unicorn? Officer, you have me at a disadvantage. Right now, I don't even know what's going on. Have I died?"

"Of course not. If you had died, I'd have to shoot you instead of giving you a ticket. Now take this ticket and eat it."

John reached out to take the ticket only to encounter the glass window and nearly jam his finger joints. It was only then that he realized he hadn't even opened the window. Despite that, he'd felt a breeze and had been talking and hearing normally through it.

The elf reached through with the ticket. "Don't you try that with me. You know darn well you have to take this ticket and eat it."

"Sorry, Officer," John said as he accepted the ticket and read it briefly.

"Now why'd you have to go and do that? Now I'll have to write you another ticket for reading."

***

"Doctor, will he make it?"

"We're not certain. The spell he was put under is wearing off. If he can stand the shock of having lost his horn, then maybe we can save him. Right now, he's suffering from delusions his mind is creating to explain his loss and make him feel normal. He'll either return to our world or he'll retreat into the world he's created for himself where he'll feel that he's normal."

Dave:

I absolutely LOVED this story!!

Poor John Terrance how confused he was. I couldn't help but re-read this story. every paragraph was full of surprises, and chocked with superb imagery. I would like to see more. Would you consider a sequel?
I look forward in reading your work. Great story!!
I'm gonna go read it again

Thanks for sharing.
Blessings
Sally

Thank you. A novel? Hmm, I'll have to give that some thought. I guess the short story could be either the ending or it could be the beginning with the rest of the story as a flashback.
