This poem -- written by Edgar Allan Poe when he was 18 years old -- was first published in 1849. The poem is 24 lines, divided into two stanzas. The poem questions the way one can distinguish between reality and fantasy, asking, "Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?"

A Dream Within a Dream
By Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

I bet she would - she's shared some stuff a while back that could definitely have been inspired by Poe. I'm glad she's busy with teaching - but wish she had more time to dedicate to the poetic lovefest we're trying to resurrect. ARG - was just gonna tell you to go hound her on Facebook....and forgot you'd deleted you account. Make another account instantly and go hound her!! LOL

Ms. PaintedDiary would love this. I have it on good authority she's a Poe fan.

    You're welcome!

I'm not too familiar with Poe's work, with the exception of the darker pieces. It's interesting to see this poem presented though, as the first line (Take this kiss upon the brow!) wants to pop out of the darkness. This piece though steps from the realm of the creepy, into the sublimely metaphysical? IDK - but I like it. And glad you do too! ;)

...Is all that we see or seem / But a dream within a dream?

Is it real or is it Memorex? What is reality? Are we dreaming and need a pinch to awaken? or is it real. Can we reach out and touch something or will our hand pass through it? I've woken from too many dreams realizing what I'd just experienced was of the ghost world of my resting imagination.

I love Edgar Allen Poe for a reason. This would be one of them.
Thanks for reminding me of him, Sis!
