Higher Or Lower

A junkie's dream
( the perfect high )
soon turns to nightmares
( coming down )
when reality closes in
as the drugs get weaker
one by one
and somewhere along the way
the highs get lower
but you know somewhere
deep down within you
that you're still a person
even though they can't see you
and you always wonder
what it's all worth
if you can ever see the sun again
and if you'll live through another
night
and will I ever be sane again
whole, complete
and I'm sorry to say
that it just isn't so
something has died
even though I'm very much
alive and well
I strayed too long and
went too far
over the edge of time
in frozen silence I stand
between yesterday, today, and tomorrow
never quite sure
of the value of any of it
my life, your life
how do we change so much?
I see another dream
beginning to gel
it is an old one
the same old simple dream
I've had since 17
that my words will see print
and more importantly,
have meaning
and that would be, to me,
the perfect high

Mike this was very raw, poignant, and full of front line. I love the straight to the point approach and considering the subject & content, was spot on in my opinion. What I have highlighted resounds so effectively, that I read it several times. I was "Moved" by this piece, having lost family members to drugs, fighting against drugs in my neighborhood, and keeping my students educated about drugs. The title alone demands attention and captured mine. Then that first line... A junkie's dream flooded my head with many thoughts, and I knew this was a must read. I believe you also embraced the "emotion" in this all the way through, as it is a journey on a high road and a low road, and time is lost. Thank you for penning this Mike as it is most memorable.
Thank you very much Kimberly. You are quite welcome and you have my permission to use it if it might help in any way with your message. Some lessons in life are so very expensive, even if you fight your way back, there is still a burning sensation of something missing. Iam on fire right now, and I threw all the fuel I had into this fire.
i thought this was a great read and very to the point the words were like headlights shinging in to your eyes. i hope others get a chance to read and appreciate the meaning to this
Thanks guys. I am very fortunate that I was able to write it. In looking back, I know how close I was to throwing my whole life away. If I could talk just one person out of that abyss...it would be enough. I think maybe I have already done that and it it an awesome feeling. If one can write truth and help someone else find truth...wow. What other justification do I need? Thanks Thomas and Scott for your kind words.
