Laughing at the gods.

Laughing at the gods.

What makes them great, those mythical men?
I think it’s their toys made way back when.
Where now is the lyre that Hermes made?
Lost in the sky, or so Zeus has said.

The thunderous hammer of Thor was a sight
Thor was strong as an ox and almost as bright
After Mjolnir was stolen to Asgard by Thrym
Thor hid it too well to be found – even by him

Gungnir was awesome, never missing it’s mark.
Odin had fun smiting foes in the dark
Odin lost his dear spear while out on a drunk
I suspect once again, it’s in Yggdrasil’s trunk

What made them great, these mythical men?
They’ve lost all their toys, lost way back when.
And the gods themselves have started to fade
Having lost all their toys, their kingdoms unmade.

Inspired by sagesweetwater, who mentioned the fates in 'A Naked Diarist' and got me thinking about mythology. Zeus and Hermes are greek, Thor and Odin are Norse. And I know...the lyre belonged to Apollo, not Hermes. But Hermes made it and traded it to Apollo for livestock. There is no mythology suggesting that Thor has lost his hammer, and Odin still has his spear. The lyre, however, Zeus did stick it in the stars, but at Apollo's request.

This is interesting because in many good tales that are very old, it shows the humanity of teh gods an doften makes fun of them, example is the story wheer Thor got his hammer taken away by a giant and who wnated to sleep with freya so Thor had to dress up as a woman and pretend to be Freya to get hi shammer back, its in a saying what I am about to say about this poem if you have no respect for the past you have no future, you have to at least admit the old norse God's who's authenticity is now dismissed by most minds were very funny indeed, and the tales great in themselves what I think about your poem is that it was pretty good but when you compare it with utter disregard for the details of the past it doesn't even raise an eyebrow

It was meant in fun, erikestabrook. That's why I had the disclaimer about Thor not losing his hammer (after the ordeal with Thyre, I meant). Actually, I have a lot of respect for these two mythologies, which is why I chose to write about them, even in jest.

I know but it is a little fun but I must have a made-up mind because it seems like mocking more than fun too me, and I have no problem with it after al it is mythology and not many believe in it today, I just think I oculd get a real good funny story outaa soemone like you about the gods becasue this poem didn't do it for me because of one small bit you talked about all their weaknessses and none of their strengths thats whats missing too me in the old tales they are admired yet they had fun with it its just a matter of personal taste really other people might like your poem how it is maybe?

Your second critique is much better, Erik. You were able to state what it was that you didn't like. Thank-you, I appreciate that.
