Memoir of a Cancer
Memoir of a Cancer
Consciously
Dastardly
Bastardly
Meticulously
Masterfully
Spreads uncontrollably
Cancer
Buried poison
Urgency engulfs tainted carapace
Adolescent tumor bursts dreams
Love that's ant-sized
Ashes of burnt pages fills ashtray
Shopping Mall for shadow people
Freebasin’ free will
Melted picture frame at eight years
Miasma memories
Cancer strikes again
Buried poison
Every cell, every prayer
Every part of my weeping soul
Should die from the cancer
From the poison
That’s buried
I want it to
Stop
Their screams
My screams
I want to
Stop
The cancer
And
Keep me

Raping

I weep for the ones that have to endure this deadly, and dangerous disease. It's a horrific welling, inside the body of the living.
I weep for those who have to be reminded of it every day.
I weep for the ones.

Dear Sally,
Thank you for taking precious time to read and to respond. I feel the same. It is a very poignant read. I was asked by our near by prison yesterday, to come and share some poetry with the inmates. I did. Being that they only give me so mush time, I decided to do something different. I read and had open discussion for half of my alloted time, and the other half I asked for one inmate to share a short story (with all the feelings, good & bad), and I would scribe a poem for that inmate. This poem is the result. I feel for all parties as you said, and I tried to scribe from his perspective. He was extremely remorseful. He was raped at the age of 8 years old, and then later in life began to rape his self, and he continued to tell me all. Driving home, I was struggling with the acts, the pain, the victims, the memories, and many other feelings before getting back to his perspective. Again, thank you for your time and blessings to you to.

Your most welcome Kim:
And thanks for sharing you visit with us from those in prison. Some I agree, need to be there, while others are just victims without the correct help in the justice system.
Biography: I published my first work at the age of 23, "People Poetry", since then 10 or so publications

Kim,
As I followed along the lines and thought of how cancer spreads (my mom died of cancer) it seemed you had penned this so well and then you put the little twist at the end and really really really used your poetic license in an incredibly passionate way. Healing begins with being understood. Your poem does not make the cancer any easier to take but does allow us to see from your personification how it can be viewed from the eyes of a person who lives with their cancer. Awesome! My Fav:

Dear Jerry,
Thank you Jerry for your precious time to read and to respond. My condolences about your Mom. My Grandmother also died of cancer, and I did think of the process. This is "the inmate's" perception, and he equated and coined the phrase "like a cancer", when sharing with me, and said that all he could ask of me is to be open when writing a poem for him. Also, please, understand, by no means did I intend for the poem to make the cancer any easier to take. I would have written a "soft" version of his perception. However, I listened to the person, put a lot of thought into this, and waited a bit, and poetically put this together for him. This is the result. Very real, very raw, and very realistic. Thank you for your comments Jerry.

I gave this poem to the person in prison today whom I wrote it for. He cried, and I said goodbye. He asked if I would be back and I said yes. He smiled, and I left....
