lol, this is quite a picture that you're painting with your poem! I just love this with what you're saying to the reader and could completely relate to it:
So I met their snickers and comments with a smile,
Because I knew something they had yet to discover.
Though I’ve been called weird for most of my life,
It no longer has its sting because I’ve decided, Weird is just another word for unique.
Too true and I've always been the person to dance in a room when no one else is dancing and I have had many times where I hear snickers and see smiles and I just kind of smile back and keep on having fun. I've had people make fun of me because of my "weirdness" and belittle me for it, but for a long time now I've just decided that those said people are just jealous that they don't have the courage to just act silly and not care what other people think.

BRAVO!
This is such a wonderful delight to read BIG SIS - I love it - there's something quite honest and refreshing about the flow of this write. I think perhaps it is a bit of poetic genius, just the testimony of it and the simplicity of the line structure. And yes - the epitome of "unique" espoused within its depth makes me knod my head in open acceptance that I too know how it is to be gawked at... To meet the glances with a geniune smile of 100% self acceptance is the courage. And People inherently recognize genuine courage and self acceptance. THAT's the beauty of being a bit different, knowing that people are inherently and subconsciously respecting you for your courage and self-acceptance and they can't do a damn thang about it!
Thanks, little sis! Since I have trouble with recurring depression, sometimes it's hard to remember to smile and to remember my own words but then I try to remember those who have so much more trouble than I.
'Poetic Genius'? I don't think anyone's ever used those two words (or the latter) in the same sentence when talking about me, lol, but thank you for the complement. When I read your work and that of others on this site, I don't see that in my own work. As a matter of fact, I was rereading it and thinking of where it needs work, lol.
It is hard to meet the stares and snickers of other people (especially of 'the popular teens' and you know who you are if you post here, lol) with a steady look and a smile but I know that at least one of them will look like me (maybe not in the same outfit, lol) someday.

Ha! That's so true - Time has a special way of equalizing LOL
But the thang is - most who have gawked at me or whatever - have most likely been cussed for filth LOL - I'm like "Take a fuckyn picture @sshole - DAMN!"
Yeah - sometimes I can see why my Mama is like "You are so unkempt and unladylike and ghetto" LOL - Oh well - but yes I have to be me every single day - so it's comforting to know after reading your poem - that I am not the only one who has ever felt "uncomfortable" in my own skin. I say 3 cheers for the "Unique" United!
