I was born strong; a preacher’s son.
A first-born son;
A sacrificial lamb, if you will.

days flew and became months
with my eyes always on the ball field
and my ear for pop's car.

always looking for the first robin
so as to have an excuse to get out
my fishing pole;

Never mind the screaming silence.
Pay no attention to the dove's cry of caution
the wind was sweeping it along;
along with the rest of who I would have been.

I shrug it off and say ahh, well, tis life.
Funny how my smile no longer seems strong enough
to overcome what lies within.
But that doesn’t happen as much these days.

And I look to the workings of life
and I wonder…
Will my child look back at the stars
through eyes untainted by the ghosts
of dead dreams?

Yes, say I.
Because I have a hand
for my child to hold;
an ear to bend,
a shoulder for a million tears.

What I never got
was returned with grace;
more than enough
to give my child forever.

ZAAC - this poem is beautful and speaks of a strength both Mama and Papa knows very well... Well in some cases... I have no children of my own - but I know this strength very well too and look forward to the day I can share it with my own.....again.

Exquisite piece of writing really - and something NEW - this style is not like any poem of yours I've ever read!

thank you Ms. J and mysty. It is a different side of me i guess...one i didnt know existed. I really didnt think it was all that good and had planned on making changes for flow and description. Not so sure I should now.

nice to meet you. this was a very cathartic piece for me and it came in less than two minutes so it must have been waiting to be written for some time. Went through a lot of life changes and rough weather for quite awhile and this piece is a cluster of flashes of my life. Kinda my way of saying for the first time in my misguided life, i know who i am and what i am here to do...self-affirmation if you will.
