hole in the wall
When I awoke to the first tentative rays of sunlight streaming in the single window of my lonely apartment, I knkew right away something was wrong. Something other than sleep was in my esyes and conering my face.
I reached up one tired hand and rubbed at whatever had come to coat my face during the night. I slept as one dead and it took a lot to wake me. My hand came back covered in bits of plaster and chips of paint presumably from the wall my bed rested against.
I sat up now curious and looked for the source of the dust and paint. It was easy to spot and not a little bit unsettling.
Not one foot above the spot I rested my weary head was a small puckered hole in the wall. Cracks ran from it in every direction and inside all I could see was a velvet black that seemed to have no end. All in all it looked like a dead eye, dark and shrouded in wrinkles.
The hole was a circle no more than two inches in diameter and perfect in shape. It was not easy to tell if something had made it from the outside or from within, the debris would have fallen on me either way. What bothered me was that it seemed to be deliberate.
It had not been caused by the settling of the old houses frame. It had not been caused by any fault in construction, and it had not been casued by me.
Something had either bouroghed inside the wall while I slumbered or something had worked its way out.
In relation to how I slept, if it had enterd the wall from the outside whatever it was would have surely had to traverse my resting body to get to the spot above my head. this was more than unsettling. As I am prone to having an overactive imagination all sorts of thoughts went through my head as to the nature of what type of creature might have slithered across me or crawled across me on many legs. I pictired something alien and grotesgue with eyes placed atop high stalks and sharp claw like appendages that were suited to making perfect circles. I pictured something that craved the dark the way we crave the light. Something that had sought refuge from the outside world inside my wall. I could see its claws working into the plaster while I slept soundly, the debris falling like dry warm snow onto my uptuurned face. I could see it squirming into the hole its insect body compressing itself so it could fit inside. Than I though of it inside the wall now. Something nocturnal and inherently evil that had fled the coming light and now slumbered waiting for the night to fall once again. Than it would emerge, perhaps slightly bigger from whatever meal it had taken the night before. It would emerge and go about its hunting and then when the morning came it would skitter back over my body and into its new nest.
This was assuming it had come from outside. What if however it had come from within the wall. What if it was something that had slept away the years in a thick cocoon changing and grwoing inside its makeshift wound. What if it had achieve maturity inside the wall and had made the hole to emerge into the outside world. And if so would it be back, was it still there now waiting to make its move?
There were to many questions that needed answering. The first thing I needed to do was to take a good look at the offending space itself. I needed to see if something was lurking inside. I needed answers to all of the crazy questions my mind had cooked up.
Gathering waht courage I could I reached inside my night table and retrieved a small steel flashlight.
I crept up on the bed and shined the small beam inside the hole. I fully expected the light to illuminate the insulation in the wall or to hit the back of the other side. Instead the hole swallowed the small beam in its entirety. It was like shing a flashlight into a night sky watching how it rose and was eaten by the velvet canopy etched with stars. the light went on and on into the emptiness and for all I know it has yet to hit something.
Now I was really nervous.....

Thanks for checking out the story. It is actually a condensced version of a longer piece. I don't know about the ending but I kind of think I might leave it as is, or not.....
