Conquered Giant
Jaw aching,
Legs disconnected
from my body. Yet,
they keep on spinning
in circles, round' and
round'. Robins hop away
then jump into the air to
escape the tires and the
click, click, coming after
them. Other birds watch
cautiously from dead
milkweed stems.
Hair whipping in the
wind, catching unfortunate
insects that are flying by.
I hear them buzzing in my ear
and wildly shake my head
to help them escape.
My muscles scream at me
to give up and become
numb in protest. Shoulders
pumping to try to gain
momentum. Ahead is a hill rising
up into the air. In my mind
it is like a gigantic mountain
for me to climb. Wanting to
stop right now and not
face this monster.
Refusing to give up I
tell myself I shall overcome
this. The sun is slowly hiding
Behind the horizon, time is limited.
Heart racing and pain courses
through my thighs. I bob up
and down, eyes stinging with
sweat that trickles down.
The smell of
flowers greets me as I
take a deep breath in.
I've reached the peak,
my goal, that had stared
me down and told me I
couldn't conquer it.
Feeling the need to rest
but refusing to listen.
Because this is just the
beginning of my journey.

OH!! Sarah!!
Wonderful poem, dear!!
You said that, this is the beginning of your journey. So, I am sure, youŽll write another part or a follow up of this poem. I like the imagery, and the way you describe your inner feelings. Great!! IŽll be coming back to read more of your poetry, Sarah. ItŽs lovely!!
(((Hugs))) Cordially, Starry.
Wow...a very wild and vivid journey it was too Sarah.
You must be exhausted! I like your word usage and
phrasing and vivid images throughout this poem.
You have a unique way with images and words.
Wonderful write that I enjoyed very much.
Your talent shines and as always write on!!
Your depiction of climbing that mountain (?) is vivid! I loved the insects catching in your hair and buzzing in your ears, a great detail I wouldn't have thought to include.
The robin hopping away then flying away was also a great detail!

Well, thank you for the reviews! Starry- thank you for reading and reviewing my poem, and I'm glad that you like the imagery. One of my favorite things is to play with imagery and it's nice to hear that you enjoyed it. And, I'm glad you'll be checking out more of my work too, I don't have a lot of it posted but what I do have is up and around. You might have to dig a bit for it but thanks again for your feedback!

Moonchild- lol, I was so exhausted when I sat down to write this poem! It was write after I finished biking and I was just thinking all of these thoughts as I was riding my bike and coming up with new lines as more happened. My legs were like jello afterwards but I do love getting out in nature and riding my bike. Thank you for the kind words and I'm very glad that you enjoy my poems! Like I said before I do like playing with images and it's nice to know that the imagery worked within this. Thanks again for your review and checking out this piece!

Gail- Well, it wasn't exactly a mountain but it sure did feel like it! And actually with the bugs detail that was what was happening to me as I was crawling up the hill, peddling hard on the bike, was that the bugs were caught in my hair because I had it down and hadn't put my hair back in a ponytail as I normally do. And, I was riding on my bike and did make a robin hop away from me, and I gotta admit, I just love how robins hop away from everything before they fly. Too cute! And thank you very much, it's wonderful to hear that you love my work! Definitely is great to hear and thanks again for the feedback!
