I’ve seen it many times
When the moments are quiet and still
and you assumed that I would not see
though I always did
That brilliant twinkle burning in your eyes
that chose to appear, when curiosity proved more than you could contain,
and innocently split over into an excited glance
and you wished only to know,
only to understand
Because in that time your mind is open
and possibilities render limitless
For perhaps the Earth spins because we are on the carousel of God
and this ride is worth its time
And you peer at me so innocently
with a longing that clings to the hope,
that I could explain how chemistry is sparked
and why the axis of the Earth remains faithful to spin
and I could answer and never disappoint
Yet you never ask to see if I will
For as soon as that twinkle blesses your eyes,
you become aware and realize yourself
and glance away, shaking it from your mind
Composure reveals its importance
I can tell when curiosity has been shunned
It is easy to see
Why the hopeful child gathers his questions,
Bears his strength,
and reveals them to a higher source
only to hang his head in reproach..
And I watch you glance away and I see
why you will never ask
though you long to know
I suppose you hear it all the time
They tell you its child-like and foolish
And that if you must know,
than you never knew,
and if you never knew,
Than you’ll never know,
and if you never know,
Than you’ll never understand.
So why bother with the dance if the steps
seem too complex and you never tried them anyway
And you, bearing all the goodness and kindness you do,
hear this and listen,
swallowing it like a bitter pill
And it kills me to know
what could suppress your creative hand
There was a time we sat by the fireside,
Two chairs and an empty desert
watching the flames devour the bleeding wood
And I looked upon your face
surprised to see
that I could watch the reflection of the fervid flames
dance in your blue eyes
And it was though I could see the fire, for itself,
as you would see it.
And as I watched the world dance though your mind
for a moment I saw it all as you saw
and for minute,
understood as you did
And I knew why that innocent twinkle only spawns upon us
for a matter of moments, that are
tossed upon one another in an ocean of desire
and I knew why you never asked,
though you longed to know
Because as more possibilities unfold
in my heart a secret grows
and I want to know as you know
and I think you feel the same
but I guess if you can never ask
than you never tell
and though I am the one who always asks
I am the one left without answers
So you must understand why,
in this vortex of our world,
whether on a carousel or not
if you will never ask, why I can never tell.
