La Batalla/ Struggle

Negro... Negro como medianoche-
Negro como una sombra entre un sombra.

Jorobadas y nocturna con manos juntas
ojos bajos

"No-" yo digo.

----------------------------------------------

Black... Black as midnight-
Black like a shadow within a shadow.

Hunchback & nocturnal, hands joined
eyes downcast
sitting on a pile of debris
at the corner of Mission & Van Ness.
Half- clothed in rags, smelling of camphor
vomit & steamy trash,
shredded- shoes dirty with mud & dung
broken with grief, mauled by the violent winds.

"Gotta a smoke?" he asks

"No-" i reply.

A moment later, like intoxicated
by that which is Holy, lost in the light of wine
hymns as if the slave- central station.

& i look at this abstract portrait of a man
homeless & withering away in this cold/
cruel & criminal world.
In this city of hunger & rust
with the same right to live as the rich.

Black... Black as coal-
Black like me.
