WAR SONG

WAR SONG

The snow is falling outside
and the early stars have risen.
Inside the smoky beer bar, in the half-light
of the old lamp, a blonde is singing.
Half-clad, with an SS cap on her head
and nylons and garters, high-heeled
and deep-voiced, she moves swaying
from soldier to soldier in the smoke-filled room
and the smell of beer gives way
to her subtle fragrance. The war
seems far away when she is near.
The light plays on her hair and falls
in diamondlike drops down her breasts
to run the length of her divine legs.
The men sigh and some sing along.
The tyranny of beauty mixed with nostalgia,
hope, and meaningful smiles continues
till the first hours of the morning
and subsides with the music and the stars
when the first sirens sound and the deep roar
of the bombers overhead stuns the countryside
into a motionless and speechless landscape.

Nikos, this is a very gripping piece...and captures the attention from beginning to end. I can smell...see...feel...and hear everything...aaah, here's to the forgetfulness of a "that much more enjoyable" couple hours free free from war and death!!
