Last night was a hell-trip, but a good one,

And I’m damn glad it happened too.

After twelve o’clock, everyone was drunk as hell,

The looks that hung on them lonely faces, men and women alike—

Empty as shop windows on Christmas day, with

    Eyes burnt-out like birthday candles.

In clouds of tobacco smoke, the nervy chaotic crowd tumbled forth,

Elbows jabbing shoulders in claustrophobic mirth, condescending glances

Mincing every person’s soul, and toward the back of the bar,

    Bare-legged sirens dancing all alone.

I was self-conscious—as I always am in dens of sin,

The weight of people’s judgment heavy on my mind,

As if their scorn was more, as if it were their greed

For my happiness. So I hid my happiness that night

    in my back pocket.

Swear I could feel the whole crippled spirit of humankind

Cramped into that narrow bar, the cloud-smoke

Burning my retina as if it were the smoke of hell,

Not one person loving another on New Year’s Eve,

Just angry lust and confusion breeding.

Me and my friends, we tried to have a time of it anyways,

We played hearty fools and ravished madmen as the crowd

Looked on defensively. We danced and we didn’t care,

We sloughed off the end of the year, me and my friends,

Dancing in the arms of giant clouds of smoke and nicotine.
