When my yellow bonnet blew across the lonely road

    In 1922….time slowed.

Though briskly the wind had swept through

and landed it at your feet

    the dust slowly settled down

that sunny, sweet, late Tennessee morn

beside the unpainted posts of the Cooke farm

where no one existed but you and me.

Trees gently swayed and birds had sung

a minute ago, but I could hear them no more.

There was a whirring in my head

and a burning in my soul

reminding me of some song of old

about soul mates and hearts easily led.

I watched intently as your long brown fingers

grasped lightly and lifted so carefully

that lacy concoction which just a moment past

caressed and kissed my smooth chocolate cheek.

As your thumb rubbed the slightly worn edges

    they trembled

as if they reacted to the feel of you.

As hand and bonnet left the ground

slow motion moved no more for me.

    Time stopped.

Since eyes full brown and piercing

saw all there was to see

I became lost in that tumultuous sea

as the smile spread wide and enveloped me.

The sky reflected blue I had never seen

I felt the sun’s rays melt my quivering heart, as

it slid from me, where it once solidly rested

and at your feet slumbered, unmolested.

Soft, but soft, petticoats gliding and easy

not breaking the kinetic prism now arisen

upon which danced breathy glimmers of love

so strong, so new, so wonderfully hidden

from anyone but you and me.

Oh, air currents at best do carry me

    silently into those arms, Prithee!

Hey MS N - this is quite beautiful piece of writing - I especially liked the Old English feel of it - the very last word of the poem speaks very lovely & unforced. But I must admit - I'm a sucker for "tumultous" - You used it just beautifully - My favorite lines:

Ah! The tumultuous see - Such a dreamy realization. And then simile and metaphor of sea to a smile.... Lovely!

I enjoyed this one immensely = Thanx for sharing ;)

I'm glad you like it, Ms. J! I was going for that old world feeling where romance was still romance and every small gesture or smile held a world of meanings and the art of flirting was perfected in both men and women. There were some things that were still a mystery between the sexes, and most of all, respect was the name of the game and women were still on a pedestal.

this was most deinfinitly romantic though... you succeeded in me mood change, you devil you ;)

But OMG - Ain't it the truth LOL
I mean I even watch reruns of Gunsmoke AND Bonanza and a few of the other "western" themed shows of "back-in-the-day" Anyway..... Yeah!

MS N - I wonder if you have a map so that my blind ass may find the Cooke Farm ROFL AND perhaps a few pistols so that I may protect myself on the way :p
