    Half Moon Caye
    wonderful summertime
    memories, except
    for the life-changing one
    when my cousin, Gene drank
    the lye, left foolishly
    ignorantly even,
    on the floor
    in the old milk
    can.
    He didn't know
    any better
    curious little feller, as
    his mama and papa
    rushed him
    back in the boat, he
    ended up
    in Jamaica, where
    doctors rescued his
    throat. His stomach they replaced
    with plastic!

They told us he got a new tummy
    "a plastic one"?
    we thought as little children
    just a little fairytaleish? and
    "It would last a year"?
    Always having to get
    that "thing" replaced. He
    dealt with the pain
    and fear, until
    he finally turned
    eighteen. Fed up!
    Wanted to quit that scene!
    He ate everything
    that he shouldn't have,
drank liquor for the first time
that scandalous New Year, skinny dipping, then
    ever so casually,
went back down to the beach
and dove! Straight off the pier!
    Never resurfacing. By the time
    we realized what
    he had done
too late! too late! too late!
    Life, short but not
    sweet. Ended....
    Beware!
    of poisonous liquids lying around
    to be found
    by innocent children
    Curiousity...casually killing themselves.
Painfully....consigned to a life not worth
    living.

very tragic and told very thoroughly with much emotion,
this had a very intense feel to it like you could tell you were reaching out to him

    Dear Ms Nomad,

This was indeed filled with emotions, and an important message. My heart goes out to you, to him, and the family. This left me in tears.

Thanks for your commenting, PD. Yes, such a tragic, unthinking and carefree life we led in Belize...and it was so common for some people, busy and trying to get 13 children fed and clothes washed, etc. to forget to be careful. Then life changes in an instant!
