    Death Row

    Oh iron bars
    And walls of gray,
    You’ve taken all
    My joy away.
    My love is gone,
    Divorced of me,
    That child of mine,
    I'll never see.
    And those that I
    Once called my friend,
    Deserted me,
    Before the end,
    Where I once dwelled
    With much respect,
    I suffer now,
    Undue neglect.
    Alone I sit
    Apart from all,
    No one will write,
    No one will call,
    All this I could,
    Accept as just,
    If I'd betrayed
    All of their trust.
    A man had died
    Then my arrest,
    A witness lied,
    No one confessed.
    Guilty is he,
    The jury said,
    A judge’s sentence
    Then was read,
    I sat for months,
    In misery,
    No one spoke on
    Behalf of me.
    I am not guilty
    Of this crime,
    But just a victim
    Of the time,
    Now silent shock,
    I feel no fear,
    I cannot even
    Shed a tear,
    Today I think,
    With every breath,
    Tonight I sleep,
    Tomorrow, death.

    OMG!! Ron:

It's a horrific thing to live with, when one is convicted of a crime they didn't commit. And then end up on death row for it.
My heart goes out to ALL of them who are sitting alone waiting for their time to come in prison. Simply it is in truth there are those that are.

I will pray for those who are alone and are in need of comfort.

Bless you Ron. This poem will wake up some people. I just hope in reality it's not too late.

    Blessings
    Sally

    Sally and Jerry,

Thank you to both of you for your very kind words. Generally I enjoy the process of writing a poem and trying to get the meter and words to fit like that of a puzzle. This was one I wrote, not really enjoying it as I wrote but trying to develop a feeling of empathy for the poor soul, subject of the writing. To the both of you, I genuinely appreciate your comments.

    Ron

Good poem, Ron, and I don't think you need to be concerned about the rhythm, it went quite smoothly in my mind.

Ron! Goodness... So scary. So powerful. Like a living nightmare; and even worse - it happens... Just to realize that, goodness!
That quiet kind of resignation... I think that hits hardest.

    Amazing write, thanks for sharing!

    Smiles!,
