In order for your submission to Pens on Fire to be read and responded to in a timely fashion, you must follow our basic guidelines.

    • If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email us at webmaster@pensonfire.com.

    • You will be automatically added to Pens on Fire's free monthly newsletter once you make a submission. You can remove yourself at any time by emailing Newsletter@pensonfire.com and leaving your name and email.

    • We ask for "one time electronic rights" for all work, which remains published for one issue (one month i.e. August, September, October). Afterward, your work is moved to our archives and all rights revert back to you, the author. If you would not like your work on our archives, please email us and we'll take it down ASAP.

    • Payment: Publishing credits only.

    • If no response in one month, please feel free to query us.

    • If submissions are not sent to the proper email address, they will not be reviewed.

    • We accept previously published work as long as you are free of prior obligations.

    Short fiction

    • We accept any genre of short fiction (stories between 500 and 4,000 words), but do not accept works with excessive sexual content (erotica) or violence for the sake of violence. Be sure your manuscript is finished and edited to the best of your ability. We hope to receive a variety of different stories: fantasy, science fiction, drama, horror, and romance.

    • Please prepare your manuscripts in the following way:

    • Email all manuscripts in Microsoft Word, or RTF attachments, to fictionsub@pensonfire.com.

    • Double space manuscripts and type in an easy to read font (Times New Roman Or Courier New), size 12.

    • Please provide your first and last name, the pen name you would like to use (if applicable), your email address, and a short, 100 word biography if you like.

    • Please send us stories that are fully developed with a consistent plot. Good stories are short and concise, not overloaded with unnecessary words and action. We would like to see work that has a beginning, middle, and end; that means development of plot, characters, and setting.

    Poetry

    • We accept poetry under fifty lines unless you provide a well written query letter prior to submission.
    • We would prefer you paste your poem into the email body with a font size of 12. You are more than welcome to send more than one poem at a time, but keep the limit to five. Please separate each poem so it is obvious where one ends and another begins.
    • Any genre of poetry is welcome. The main criterion for poem submissions is to to be original and unique in delivery. We want the poetry to evoke imagery for the reader or an emotion. We do not want "I love susie or bill" type poems, poems with poor rhyme scheme, or poorly composed works.
    • We reserve the right to change formatting if we feel that it would better suit your poem and make it easier to read. We will NEVER tamper with your original wording.
    • Please spell check your submissions and make sure they are a finished product.
    • Send all poetry submissions to poetrysub@pensonfire.com.

    • Non Fiction
    • All non-fiction submissions should be between 500 words and 2,500 words.

    • You can either send us an RTF file (attachment), a Microsoft Word file (attachment), or paste your story into the body of your email, clearly marking where it begins and ends.

    • We are looking for writing related topics for non-fiction: how to write a cover letter, how to write a query, how to write a certain kind of poem, what to do when you find an editor that tries to rip you off. Anything writing related, just as long as it's well written and is knowledgeable. If you have something to say "about" writing, such as what your motivation is, or where you get your ideas, or ways to boost your inspiration and discipline, we will be very happy to read it.

    • Email all manuscripts in Microsoft Word, or RTF attachments, to fictionsub@pensonfire.com.

    Art and Music

    • We accept song lyrics under 50 lines. We have no standards for composition and artwork as far as size is concerned.

    • Please send lyric and composition submissions to lyricssub@pensonfire.com.

    • Please send art submissions to artsub@pensonfire.com.

    • We are accepting any medium for artwork. We are looking for pieces that portray soul and meaning, work that offer insight into the artist's world. We will not accept something that is scantily thrown together or doesn't provide something that is meaningful.

    • For our lyrics and composition, we are accepting anything as long as there is meaning and a desire to make the work the best it can be.
