    Reading Periods
    • Regular Submissions: August 1 to December 31, 2007
    • Emerging Writers Issue: January 1 to March 31, 2008

[imga=left]http://www.pshares.org/images/logomain.gif[/imga]Ploughshares welcomes unsolicited submissions of fiction, poetry, and a limited amount of nonfiction. Please note that next reading period, we will be considering regular submissions only from August 1 to December 31, 2007. From January 1 to March 31, 2008, we will be reading for a special Emerging Writers issue. Guidelines will be posted on this site in July 2007.

GUEST EDITOR POLICY: Ploughshares is published three times a year: mixed issues of poetry and fiction in the Spring and Winter and a fiction issue in the Fall, with each guest-edited by a different writer of prominence, usually one whose early work was published in the journal. Guest editors are invited to solicit up to half of their issues, with the other half selected from unsolicited manuscripts screened for them by staff editors. This guest-editor policy is designed to introduce readers to different literary circles and tastes, and to offer a fuller representation of the range and diversity of contemporary letters than would be possible with a single editorship. Yet, at the same time, we expect every issue to reflect our overall standards of literary excellence. We strongly suggest that you examine one or two issues of Ploughshares or, at the very least, some of the work displayed on this site before submitting.

NEEDS: We seek work of the highest literary quality, but otherwise do not have any specific guidelines for style or subject matter. We no longer arrange issues with thematic topics. On occasion, we do publish issues that feature emerging writers; always look at our website before submitting for announcements. Although we look primarily for short stories, we occasionally publish personal essays/memoirs. Novel excerpts are acceptable if self-contained. Unsolicited book reviews and criticism are not considered. Translations are welcome if permission has been granted.

GENERAL FORMAT: Submit one prose piece or one to three poems. A citation of publications and awards, if any, is helpful. Poems should be individually typed either single- or double-spaced on one side of the page. Prose should be typed double-spaced on one side and be no longer than thirty pages. There are no preferences in regards to names in headers or footers, or to staples or paper clips; we do like margins to be flushed left, however, instead of justified.

DEADLINES AND ADDRESSES: Our reading period is August 1 to March 31 (postmark dates). All submissions sent from April through July are returned unread. We adhere very strictly to these dates. Since we operate on a first-received, first-read basis, we cannot make exceptions or hold work. Submit your work at any time during our reading period; if a manuscript is not timely for one issue, it will be considered for another. We do not recommend trying to target specific guest editors. Our backlog is unpredictable, and staff editors ultimately have the responsibility of determining for which editor a work is most appropriate. Mail submissions to: Ploughshares, Emerson College, 120 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02116-4624. Our online submission system may be accessed at http://www.pshares.org/submit.

RESTRICTIONS: Send only one manuscript at a time, either by mail or online. Do not send duplicate or multiple submissions. There is a limit of two total submissions per writer per reading period, regardless of genre, whether it is by mail or online. Do not send a second submission until you have heard about the first. We will cross-reference our databases periodically, and if we find more than one active submission, or a third submission (or more) during the reading period, all submissions will be immediately and summarily rejected unread. Simultaneous submissions to other journals are amenable as long as they are indicated as such and we are notified immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. We do not reprint previously published work.

SUBMISSIONS BY MAIL: Mail your manuscript in a page-size manila envelope, your full name and address written on the outside (at least an inch down from the top, to account for USPS barcodes). In general, address submissions to the"Fiction Editor,""Poetry Editor," or"Nonfiction Editor," not to the guest or staff editors by name, unless you have a legitimate association with them or have been previously published in the magazine. Unsolicited work sent directly to a guest editor's home or office will be ignored and discarded; guest editors are formally instructed not to read such work. All manuscripts and correspondence regarding submissions should be accompanied by a self-addressed, 39¢-stamped #10 envelope (S.A.S.E.) for a response; no replies will be given to domestic addresses by e-mail or postcard. For international submissions, please include a stamped International Reply Coupon (I.R.C.) with your self-addressed envelope, or provide a valid email address for us to respond with. Send a recyclable copy of your manuscript; manuscript copies will not be returned.

SUBMISSIONS ONLINE: Go to our home page: http://www.pshares.org/. Upload only one file, containing one prose piece or one to three poems. If you have a legitimate association with a guest or staff editor or have been previously published in the magazine, you may address that editor by name in the "Comments" box. You should also paste a brief citation of publications and awards (less than 50 words), if any, into the "Comments" box. A longer citation of credits or a cover letter may be included as the first page of your submission file. We recommend saving files as rich-text format (.rtf). If you are not familiar with this format, simply do a Google search for "Saving files in rich text format." Mac users, please be sure you save your file so the filename includes the ".rtf" file extension. More instructions are on the first login page. In general, you will receive a faster response online versus by regular mail. However, please be advised that, depending on volume, we may shorten the reading period for online submissions at any time. Announcements will be made on our website. The reading period for submissions by mail will not change.

NOTIFICATIONS AND QUERIES: Expect three to five months for a decision (our backlog is heaviest during the fall). We now receive well over a thousand manuscripts a month, so please be patient. Do not query us until five months have passed, and if you do, please write to us, including an S.A.S.E. and indicating the postmark date of submission, instead of calling or e-mailing. If you submit online, you will be able to track the status of your submission yourself. We cannot accommodate revisions, changes of return address, or forgotten S.A.S.E.'s after the fact. We cannot be responsible for delay, loss, or damage.

PAYMENT: Payment is upon publication: $25/printed page, $50 minimum per title, $250 maximum per author, with two copies of the issue and a one-year subscription. For more information about literary magazines, consult directories such as CLMP’s Literary Presses and Magazine Direcotry, The Writer's Market, and The International Directory of Literary Magazines and Small Presses.
