    RENDEZVOUS

    Before the gods manage
to put sleep in my eyes.

    The most conspicuous place
in the tavern is the darkest one.

    Wine mixed rightly and
    drunk freely tonight.

    Abundance of purple clothes
and sweet green eyes all around

    but I want hers, blue
and kind of sad and languid.

She is the nuance and music
    of her own radiance, ready,

    and a splendid stallion
    gallops deep in her dreams.

She is a child in summer
    playing in the country sunlight.

She has woven red and violet
wreaths into her hair. It is late.

And I the man who waits,
    weaving my time into memories.

    Dawn breaks, crowds of doves
take to the air, the wine is all gone.

The darkest table in the tavern
    is still empty and cold.

I waited all night, O lady.
    Why didn’t you come?
