Obamas host poetry night at White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama says the White House is a place where people should feel free to speak their minds. To that end, she and President Obama welcomed actors, poets and writers to the East Room on Tuesday.

The Obamas hosted a night of poetry reading and the spoken word featuring James Earl Jones, Esperanza Spalding and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The night also included musical interludes, modern poetry and excerpts from Shakespeare.

Mrs. Obama says the administration wants to make the White House available to everyone. She also wants performers to share their experiences.

The president says such performances can express beauty and pain.

Students from Washington-area colleges joined the Obamas around small tables.

I read this story and I just smiled - I had to smile - this was lovely sentiments from the White House to include such a showcase of talents. Imagine - A poetry slam at the White House! "We're Here - We're Poets and we will paint the White House lavendar with fabulous words in fabulous order that shall make humanity awe with glee in their eyes..."

Good going Obamas!

I truly believe the First Lady in on to somthing! By allowing the doors of the White House to be Open to the world arts. Poetry specifically, just when it seems the world thinks all for our Great Poets have long since past away. Poets like: Robert Frost, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe. What about:Ms. Jacquiic, Erik Estabrook, Painted (Diary)One, Nomadicrhymer,Zaac and even me? Why can't we have a chance to shine our greatness also? I think the White will be open from now on to shine a light on a whole new world of Poets and I applaud the Obamas for making that happen!
