Call for submissions for first volume of literary/arts journal

The Labletter is a 'zine for the members of a national artist collective which is making the leap to an annual journal this year. We are currently accepting submissions for short fiction to appear in the first volume of The Labletter. The Labletter represents interests in filmmaking, theater, music, photography, writing and multi-media arts, so diversity is our only theme. Writers may submit multiple stories for consideration but we ask that each entry be sent separately with a cover letter. Submissions should be between 1,000 and 5,000 words, and should be emailed as a Word doc or PDF attachment to labfiction@gmail.com. The winning submission will receive a copy of the journal as well as the option to have the story appear on The Labletter's website. The submission deadline is July 31, 2008 and publication is expected in late fall/early winter of this year.

Hello and Welcome to JPiC

A few questions:
  • What is the Labletter website url?
  • Is there any compensation for accepted submissions? (ie. pay, copies, etcetera...)
  • Are you accepting poetry or artwork as well?

Thanx for posting.

Jacquii.

MsJacquii, I tried to find this website or any reference to it but couldn't find anything. When I googled Labletter, I got results for a lab software. Is this legit? It doesn't mention the name of the group for the journal or much else. I'm considering sending some kind of query letter starting with the question, 'Huh?"

hugs,
Gail

LOL - I too googled and I didn't find any info on a Labletter website either - I did see the same exact post as the 1st post on craiglist.org though --- Um - as far as the call being legit - I can't answer that, as Labletter hasn't answered my initial questions... The one thing I notice is that there is no fee associated with sending in submissions - so... Could very well be legit - Feel free to contact the poster via email or PM....

Answers to Ms. Jacquii's questions

Sorry for the delay in responding--we're having hellish storms and tornadoes and the electricity's been a bit iffy today.

The Labletter is being put together by an artist collective called The Lab. You're not finding anything when you google it because there's nothing to find yet. We're more concerned with meeting our printing deadline than getting the website up right now, though our release includes a clause for electronic rights so that we may publish works online when the website is launched.

I believe I stated in the call that the selected author will receive a copy of The Labletter, but alas, there is no monetary compensation.

I am only editing for short fiction, but I will be happy to pass any artwork or poetry along to the folks handling those sections. The idea behind The Labletter is to let the artists in The Lab (which I am not, they have hired me strictly for fiction) publish what they feel is interesting and worthwhile art.

I hope this helps!

Hi SARAH and thanx very much for responding = There ya go MS GAIL
If you would please, have the other editors (or you may as well) post requirements for artwork, poetry and other formats you're accepting for the premiere issue. There very well could be a few JPiC Members interested in contributing.

ALSO - if you or the company is looking for a website design- See JacquiiCooke.com - Home

I received a nice reply to my email saying pretty much the same thing. What do you think of my sending in Samina's Transition? I've made changes to it, quite a bit of changing and SarahNSH made a few suggestions to tighten it up.

I have a few more changes to make to it but other than that, it's pretty much finished for now.

hugs,
Gail

Hey Gail!

Well, I know you're probably asking MsJacquii but I've been secretly following this thread (Oh no, my secrets out now!) but I totally think you should enter Samina's Transition! I think that it's great, unique with the story that you're telling, you got some compelling characters, suspense, ect. and I definitely think you should go for it.

I don't know. There's so many talented writers out there with much better stories than I could ever think of. Guess I'll have to give it more thought. Yeah, the story's good, even I can see that but I think they're looking for better than good, especially if it's their first attempt at a journal.

A national artist collective? To me that says the people in it are damned good. I'm still learning my craft. Like I said, I'm gonna have to really sit down and think about it instead of sending it out with my first thought.

Thanks for the advice though Sarah.

hugs,
Gail

Don't sell yourself short GAIL - even Shakespeare had to have a 1st piece ever published... And likewise with other notable greats... I wonder if they too said "There's so many talented writers out there with much better stories than I could ever think of."
