We are always looking for writers who are willing to take a chance with form and content, as long as you are finding new ways to tell a story.
We are also eager to see new creative nonfiction and visual art.
So, don't be shy, send us your work.
submission guidelines
new south publishes previously unpublished literary and visual art promoting the work of emerging and established artists. new south holds no subject biases. The staff will select the best work regardless of style or genre. While we review manuscripts year round, response times may be longer during the summer.
Each submission must include the following:
- A cover letter with a 3 to 4-line bio, a list of the work(s) submitted in the order they appear, and your name, mailing address, phone number and e-mail address
- SASE for notification (we recycle manuscripts unless you send sufficient postage and request the return of your manuscript)
We do not acknowledge receipt of submissions. And, while we take the greatest care in handling your submissions, we assume no responsibility for lost or damaged manuscripts. Only unpublished work will be considered. We do consider simultaneous submissions but please notify us in your cover letter that you have submitted elsewhere. Please notify us immediately upon acceptance of your work elsewhere. All rights revert to author after publication.
We do not accept electronic submissions at this time. However, you may query us with a digital sample for visual art submissions.
POETRY
Address poetry submissions to Jenny Sadre-Orafai, Poetry Editor.
- Poems must be typed or letter quality printed.
- Submit up to three poems.
- All poems must include name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on each page.
PROSE (Fiction / Creative Nonfiction)
Address prose submissions to Jody Brooks, Prose Editor.
- Manuscripts must be typed or letter quality printed.
- On the first page of the manuscript include name, address, phone, email, and word count.
- Submissions should generally not exceed 7500 words. Short-short stories are welcome.
- Submit up to one short story, three short-shorts, or one work of creative nonfiction.
VISUAL ART - We publish reproductions (color or black & white) of a wide range of art: paintings, photography, prints, sculpture, and more. Usually we feature one image each on the front and back covers plus an interior portfolio of eight additional works, and our editorial preference is for groupings that display an engaging variety within some overall thematic unity.
- Submissions should include no more than twenty high-quality, original slides, transparencies, sharp, glossy, 5" x 7" photographs, or JPEGs of 300 dpi, 5" x 7".
new south publishes two issues a year—a Fall / Winter issue and a Spring / Summer contest issue. Subscriptions are $8 annually, $5 for a current issue and $3 for sample back issues.
