PRISM international publishes exciting, original material from established and unknown writers in Canada and around the world.
Please Note: PRISM does not accept submissions from students and faculty of the University of British Columbia’s Creative Writing Program (this includes the UBC Optional-Residency MFA Program). In order to submit, UBC alumni cannot have taken a UBC Creative Writing Program course during the previous two years.
We accept submissions year round. Due to the high volume of submissions we receive each month, reply times range between 2 to 6 months, depending on the time of year.
Submission Guidelines- Send original, unpublished material in short fiction, poetry, translation, creative nonfiction, and drama. Include a brief cover letter with a short bio and publications list.
- Along with your submission, please provide complete contact information, including an email address.
- Manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced (in the case of prose) on letter-sized paper. No email submissions. Please direct submissions to appropriate Editor.
- Send only one piece of fiction / nonfiction / drama per submission; 5 poems per submission. Maximum submission length: 25 pages. We do not appreciate simultaneous submissions.
- We do not consider work that has appeared on the Internet unless it has only been posted to writers' forums for discussion.
- To ensure a reply and/or the return of your material, include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient Canadian postage, or an International Reply Coupon if you are submitting from outside Canada. Alternatively, include an email address. NOTE: if incorrect/insufficient postage is used, we can not reply or return your material.
- Nonfiction pieces should be creative, exploratory, or experimental in tone. Accompanying photographs will occasionally be considered for publication. We do not publish rhetorical, academic, or journalistic nonfiction.
- We do not publish genre writing such as romance, horror, or science fiction. Please read back issues of PRISM as a guideline.
- Translations are sought in all genres and must be undertaken with the permission of the original author. Wherever possible, include a copy of the original work.
- We purchase first North American serial rights, and pay $40/printed page for poetry, $20/printed page for prose. Contributors receive a one-year subscription to PRISM international. The editorial board awards an annual $500 prize to an outstanding poetry contributor in each volume.
